Doctor Doom Already Proved He’s the Greatest Threat by Completely Annihilating Thanos

This year’s SDCC has been full of surprises. We learned that the next ‘Avengers’ film is being retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom. The MCU appears to be shifting focus from Kang the Conqueror as the main villain of the Multiverse Saga to a threat even more formidable: Victor von Doom.

After ‘Endgame,’ many fans were concerned that the MCU wouldn’t be able to introduce a villain as powerful or menacing as Thanos. However, the comics provide compelling evidence that Doctor Doom could be even more dangerous than Thanos ever was.

In ‘Secret Wars #8’ (2015), we see the extent of Doctor Doom’s power, but it’s important to clarify that this version of Doom is not the typical one. In this storyline, he is God-Emperor Doom, having stolen the power of the Beyonders.

After the ‘Time Runs Out’ storyline concluded with a major incursion destroying reality as we knew it, Doctor Doom used the Beyonder’s power to forge a new reality from the remnants of the old ones, which he named Battleworld. He ruled as God-Emperor Doom, with Sheriff Stephen Strange as his right hand and the Foundation as his left.

Battleworld was generally peaceful, but Doom was never fully satisfied and saw himself as the realm’s greatest flaw. Eventually, discoveries led the inhabitants to uncover the true origins of both Doom and Battleworld, sparking a series of insurrections. Doom responded to these revolts with ruthless and brutal force.

Among his unlikely foes was Thanos, who sought to overthrow Doom. Doom proposed a deal to Thanos: he could keep his horde and his “lands” if he agreed to stop attacking him and abandon his attempts to dethrone God-Emperor Doom.

Thanos was deeply offended by Doom’s offer, recalling his own past as a god and his use of the Infinity Gauntlet, which granted him immense power. He dismissed Doom as a false god and a pretender, offering him the chance to bow before him instead.

Doom pointed out that Thanos no longer possessed the Gauntlet and proceeded to tear his skeleton from his body, leaving Thanos as a mutilated, lifeless wreck.

It’s one of the briefest battles in the story, as Thanos was taken aback by Doom’s swift and brutal retaliation.

This fight is particularly intriguing and demonstrates the absolute and devastating power of the Beyonders. It’s a storyline we hope to see adapted in ‘Secret Wars,’ as witnessing Doctor Doom humiliate a Thanos variant in the MCU would definitively settle any debates about Thanos being the strongest villain in the MCU.
