Does Konohamaru Become Hokage? (and When?)

The Hokage is a very prestigious title one can hold. Although most Hokage have actually been extremely powerful, much more powerful than other Kage, for example, the title has been made famous thanks to Naruto Uzumaki, whose sole goal in life was to become the next Hogake, which he eventually did. But, the Naruto franchise introduced another character with the same goal and potential as Naruto – Konohamaru!

Konohamaru doesn’t become Hokage yet. He has great potential and based solely on that, he certainly is a great candidate for Naruto’s successor. With willpower as strong as Naruto’s, Konohamaru could potentially become as powerful as Naruto and could inherit the title of Hogake from him, but we think we’re still a long way to go from there.

In this article, we are going to discuss Konohamaru’s potential to become the next Hokage after Naruto. You’re going to find out what has happened in that aspect and what still needs to happen for Konohamaru to become the next Hokage. You’re also going to find out when you could expect to see Konohamaru become the next Hokage.

Does Konohamaru Become Hokage?

Konohamaru Sarutobi is a shinobi of the Sarutobi clan of Konoha Hidden Village. He strives to one day be as strong as his idol, Naruto Uzumaki. Now, we all know that Naruto’s sole wish was to become the next Hokage. Sure, his powers surpass that of the Hokage, he is much more powerful than that, but Naruto was consistently modest and all he wanted to do was protect his village, which is why he did.

Now, Konohamaru is a very specific character with a specific personality. He’s usually with his two best friends and teammates, Udon and Moegi. He and his teammates constantly try to quietly follow Naruto Uzumaki with poor executions from the Invisibility Cloak. Konohamaru’s biggest influence is Naruto himself, looking up at him like a role model.

At various times, Naruto and Konohamaru seem to have some common bond with each other, such as the use of perverted techniques, determination, and fiery demeanor. Konohamaru ends most of his sentences with “Kore”, a bit like Naruto with his “dattebayo“. Even though Konohamaru and Naruto pretend to be rivals, the two clearly have a deep relationship and understanding of each other, which goes far beyond the boundaries of a mentor / protégé relationship.

Konohamaru idolizes Naruto in a way like no one else, which was also demonstrated in the first two seasons combined, with Konohamaru calling Naruto “Chief.” He confided in Naruto and told him he was sad because no one saw him for who he really is; on the contrary, they only saw in him the grandson of the Third Hokage and was always called “honorable grandson” instead of Konohamaru. He loved Naruto because he thought they were similar.

They eventually became very close, with Konohamaru constantly calling Naruto “Nii-san”, which can be translated as big brother, and Naruto also taught Konohamaru a few techniques, which the latter is good at. Like Naruto, Konohamaru dreams of becoming a Hokage. However, he is content to wait until he is the Eighth Hokage, as he is perfectly convinced that Naruto was going to succeed Tsunade, as the Sixth Hokage; Naruto eventually became the Seventh, succeeding Kakashi.

Now, this tells us that Konohamaru is not the Hokage at this point, nor does he become Hokage in the near future. Naruto is still very young and he is alive and well, so there’s not much space for Konohamaru at this point. Still, Konohamaru is going to continue working on his skills and will one day certainly become worthy enough to succeed Naruto, which is going to be the topic of our next section.

Will Konohamaru Become Hokage?

The Hokage is the ruler of Konoha having a function similar to that of a mayor in our world. He is usually the strongest ninja in the village, although ideology and fame are important criteria for choosing the chosen one. The Hokage is the chief of the village, it is he who makes the administrative decisions and who gives the missions to the ninjas.

The Hokage has his personal guard, the Anbu, Konoha special forces. Six shinobi and one kunoichi have received the title to date, and one shinobi has been awarded the title of Candidate for the Hokage position. When the seat of Hokage is vacant, in the event of the death or inability to govern of the previous Hokage, the Council of Konoha and the Council of the Fire Daimyô must choose a replacement as soon as possible.

The example of Tsunade illustrates this kind of situation. Next, the candidate for the post of Hokage will need to be approved by the jônin of the village. Once officially elected, the Hokage takes up residence in the Hokage residence and sees his face sculpted on the village cliff.

So far, there have been seven Hokage:

1. Hashirama Senju

Hashirama Senju was the First Hokage and one of the founders of Konoha, the big brother of Tobirama Senju and the grandfather of Tsunade and Nawaki. He was the great rival of Madara Uchiwa, as the legend says “Senju against Uchiwa”. One of his greatest exploits as a Hokage was to defeat Kyûbi and Madara Uchiwa in the Valley of the End, even though it is known that the latter would have survived and would have stolen part of the genetic attributes of the First of the name, namely the Mokuton, during this clash.

2. Tobirama Senju

Tobirama Senju was the Second Hokage. He was the little brother of Hashirama Senju, the great uncle of Tsunade and Nawaki, but also the sensei of the Third Hokage. He was the greatest user of Suiton and was the creator of Multi Cloning and Edo Tensei, a technique that Orochimaru and Kabuto succeeded in improving to the point of elevating this technique as the most powerful ninjutsu according to Kabuto.

3. Hiruzen Sarutob

Hiruzen Sarutob was named Third Hokage by Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, before dying. Along with Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane, he was among the students of the first two Hokage, Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju.

4. Minato Namikaze

Minato Namikaze was the Fourth Hokage. He was the pupil of Jiraya and the teacher of Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiwa and Rin Nohara. He was the husband of Kushina Uzumaki and the father of Naruto Uzumaki. He was the creator of Rasengan, although incomplete, which he transmitted to Jiraiya.

5. Tsunade

Tsunade was the Fifth Hokage of Konoha Village, replacing Hiruzen Sarutobi after his death. Tsunade is the sole descendant of the Senju clan: she is the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage.

6. Kakashi Hatake

Kakashi Hatake became the Sixth Hokage after the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War, after Tsunade relinquished his post. Although he was never interested in becoming a Hokage, he eventually accepted the title.

7. Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto Uzumaki succeeded his sensei and obtained, after having so desired, the title of Seventh Hokage. He fully realizes his dream after becoming one of the most powerful shinobi in history.

Now, we have explained that Konohamaru did not become Hokage as of yet, and in the paragraphs above, we have explained how the whole title actually functions. And how one does become Hokage. Now, as we know from the Boruto storyline, Naruto is still alive and is the current Hokage but that will change at one point, since Naruto is not immortal. So, will Konohamaru succeed Naruto? Quite probably, yes.

Based on what we know, Konohamaru has the same ambition as Naruto had when he was young and the two of them are very similar in a lot of ways. Konohamaru works hard to become like his idol and in all honesty, we’re quite certain that he will, at one point, succeed. Konohamaru has the will, the potential, and the skills to reach Naruto’s level. He also has a very high level of respect towards Naruto and is careful to learn a lot from him during the course of the show.

This is why we think that Konohamaru will succeed Naruto as the next Hokage. When will that happen? Let us see in the next section of our article.

When Can We Expect to See Konohamaru Become Hokage?

Boruto doesn’t seem to be close to ending at the time of writing this article, so we don’t have an exact time period for you. Naruto might die (hopefully not), which would certainly make the succession happen quicker, but if he doesn’t – and we hope he won’t – he’s still a long way from retiring. Naruto is pretty young and we know that some Kage remained on the function until they were pretty old.

This is why we think that we’re still a long way from Konohamaru succeeding Naruto Uzumaki as the next Hokage, but when the time comes for Naruto to have a successor, we think that Konohamaru is the most likely candidate.
