Does Shrek Have a Cameo in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?

Puss in Boots: The Last wish just came out after an 11-year-long break, and it’s everything we hoped it would be. Dark themes are presented in a light-hearted matter, awesome fighting scenes, great humor, and a villain that sends shivers down your spine. Puss is a product of Shrek, though, and appears in all movies except the first one. Only after the 4th and final installment of Shrek have we seen Puss get his movie. Fans have been waiting long to see Shrek back on the big screen, so does he have a cameo in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?

Shrek does not have a cameo in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The movie focuses entirely on Puss in Boots, his old friend, Kitty Softpaws, and the newest addition to his friend group, Perrito. He is shown in a clip of Puss’s memories, though, but only for what seems to be a second.

There’s certainly more to unravel regarding Shrek in the movie, and the ending is crucial to unraveling that mystery. We’ll talk about what the kind of cameo is and if other characters from Shrek had their cameo in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, so stick around to find out.

Kind of a cameo

While all of Puss in Boots’s memories of his past eight lives are displayed, there is a split second where Shrek, his good old friend, is shown as a core memory. Given the flashback, it appears that Puss hasn’t seen Shrek and his friends in a while, but how do we know for sure that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish isn’t set before one of the sequels of Shrek?

In the Shrek movies, we don’t see Puss appear until the second part of the movie, where Puss teams up with Shrek and Donkey after a failed assassination attempt to defeat the Fairy Godmother and put Prince Charming to shame so at the very least, we can consider that Puss had his adventure from The Last Wish after the 2nd part.

However, in Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After, there is no sign of Perrito nor KItty that team up at the end of The Last Wish with Puss and embark on new adventures together. Why is this important? Let’s take a look at the ending of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

The ending

I won’t spoil much, but basically, at the end of the movie, Puss is seen stealing a boat alongside Perrito and Kitty, and they are heading on new adventures together. In the background, you can see the Far Far Away Hollywood-like sign followed up with Puss’s words where he says something along the lines of how it’s time to embark on new adventures and visit old friends.

The ending is important because, after a 12-year-old break from the movie Shrek and an 11-year-old one from Puss in Boots, we finally get to see at least one of the beloved characters back on the big screen. It might just be that the movie is foreshadowing the big return of one of our generation’s greatest animated films: Shrek.

The ending, in that sense, proves it, so while Shrek might not have had a cameo in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, we got something way better; a new hope that we will see the return of Shrek in the 5th installment of the movie franchise.

Will there be a new Shrek movie?

There have been rumors about a new Shrek movie release. The script is already done, and the production should have already started. Supposedly, it was supposed to be released sometime in 2020, but since Covid-19 hit and made production difficult, it has been delayed until 2022. Newer information and the fact that we’re at the end of 2022 indicate that we won’t see Shrek on the big screen for a long time.

Many have speculated about what the 5th movie could be about since Shrek established himself as a happily ever after character in the end. Some say it might be that he’ll have to deal with teenagers since his three kids have had a long time to grow up. One thing is almost certain, Shrek 5 will include the original cast, and it’ll be good enough for the nostalgic bunch of adults eagerly awaiting its return to amass a new audience.

We can only hope Universal won’t mess it up since Shrek was initially made as a DreamWorks Animation studio production. If Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a mirror of what we can expect from Shrek, the future looks bright, and experiments with new animation styles are a hit with critics and audiences alike.

Did other characters from Shrek have a cameo in the movie?

Pinnochio and Ginger Man were the only other characters that had a cameo in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish but only as memories. Ginger Man appears at the beginning of the movie in one of Puss’s flashbacks of how he died. In it, he sets the oven to high and burns to a crisp while Ginger Man barely escapes.

Pinnochio, on the other hand, appears in Big Jack Horner’s memories, where he amazes the crowd with his show, unlike Jack Horner, that doesn’t impress anyone even though he is a real boy and Pinnochio isn’t.

Let’s not forget Kitty Softpaws from the First Puss in Boots movie, that also appears in the second one and not only has a cameo but plays a major part in Puss’s journey of self-discovery and coming face-to-face with mortality and why he hasn’t led eight fulfilling lives so far-
