The storyline of Vinland Saga involves two entirely different characters. Of course, the main character is Thorfinn, who lost his father at an early age and went out to try to take revenge on the man who killed him. However, the second character, Canute, took the life of Askeladd, who was responsible for killing Thorfinn’s father, much to Thorfinn’s rage. So, does Thorfinn fight and kill Canute in Vinland Saga?
Thorfinn and Canute do not fight. That’s because Thorfinn has decided never to fight and kill anyone for no good reason, as he no longer wants to be responsible for hurting another person. Meanwhile, Canute has never been a fighter and is more of a commander and a manipulator.
Even though there is a connection between Thorfinn and Canute during the earlier part of their narratives and journeys, the thing is that they don’t pursue the same goals and are hardly ever going to go down the same path. That is why Thorfinn and Canute are unlikely to fight one another anytime in the future. And we are here to discuss why a fight between these characters probably won’t happen.
Does Thorfinn Fight and Kill Canute?
During the first season and the prologue part of Vinland Saga, we saw how the war between England and Denmark shaped the lives of both Thorfinn and Canute. Thorfinn, the storyline’s main character, lost his father to Askeladd, who was paid to assassinate the legendary Viking leader. Thorfinn decided to follow Askeladd, as he wanted to kill him in an honorable fight after earning it from the mercenary leader. Meanwhile, Canute was an “expendable” prince that Thorfinn saved and protected during the war, which was responsible for shaping him into the ambitious man he eventually became.
Of course, Canute was responsible for one of the biggest moments in Thorfinn’s life. When Askeladd killed King Sweyn to protect his home country of Wales, Canute decided to end the man’s life by stabbing him with a sword at the right moment. This hugely affected Thorfinn because all he wanted to do in life was to kill Askeladd for revenge. But Canute took this from him, which was why Thorfinn attacked the prince.
It is needless to say that Thorfinn was unsuccessful in trying to kill Canute because the guards took him and sold him off to slavery at the orders of the prince. He has since been working as a slave on Ketil’s farm, where he got nightmares of the past and what he did while working for Askeladd. Thorfinn even shared with Einar the story of how someone else killed Askeladd. So, does that mean that Thorfinn will eventually fight and kill Canute?
It is unlikely that Thorfinn and Canute will ever fight, which means that Thorfinn is unlikely to kill Canute even though he has a good reason to try to kill him. And it is important to understand the characters’ storylines and what they have been up to if you want to see why they probably won’t ever fight.
Of course, Thorfinn and Canute cross paths again, but they have become quite insignificant to one another as they have different life goals and priorities. And this is where it becomes important to see where their paths are taking them.
Why Doesn’t Thorfinn Fight Canute?
Thorfinn and Canute are unlikely to fight sometime in the near future because they are no longer going down the same path and are unlikely to cross paths in a violent way. Of course, it also boils down to the fact that Thorfinn underwent a massive character development during the second season when he worked as a slave on Ketil’s farm.
When Thorfinn was a slave, he lost all meaning in life because he no longer had a true goal or purpose after Canute killed Askeladd. However, he frequently suffered nightmare after nightmare as the ghosts of those he killed while working for Askeladd haunted him. His conscience told him he had spent his life fighting and killing people for no good reason.
As such, Thorfinn eventually decided that he would never fight, hurt, or kill anyone for no good reason. He decided to only fight whenever it was necessary. However, he promised to always try to talk things over peacefully before resorting to violence. As such, Thorfinn became a pacifist who would only fight if he needed to or if someone threatened the safety of the people he cared about.
In that regard, Thorfinn would not fight anyone for revenge, even if the man was Canute, who we know was the one who robbed him of his will to live. And the most important part here is that Thorfinn no longer hates Canute.
Thorfinn confided with Einar that he didn’t even hate the man responsible for killing Askeladd, which confused him. Normally, he would have wanted to live to take revenge on Canute, but he didn’t even harbor any hatred for him. And that means that Thorfinn doesn’t even have a reason to want to fight and kill Canute.
Meanwhile, Canute’s story is different. His goal is establishing heaven on Earth for the Vikings, so he wants Denmark to prosper under his leadership. In the manga, he even told Thorfinn that they wanted the same goal in life but had different paths to take, and that means that he knows that they are looking to achieve their goals in different ways.
Thorfinn’s goal, as revealed in the manga, is to go to Vinland to establish a settlement free of violence, slavery, and inequality. As such, his journey is taking him on a path entirely different from Canute’s own, which is to find a way for Denmark to prosper under his leadership.
There’s also the fact that Canute was never a fighter. Before the events of the War arc, Canute had never experienced war firsthand and was never trained to become a fighter. After he matured, he learned how to fight but was never someone who would march into a fight on the frontlines. Instead, he excelled as a commander that knew how to manipulate people.
As such, even if Thorfinn and Canute violently cross paths, it is unlikely that Canute would even want to fight Thorfinn because he would rather have someone else do it for him. And that is why there’s a good chance that Thorfinn will never fight and kill Canute in the storyline of Vinland Saga.
