One of the things that we know about the storyline of ‘Castlevania: Nocturne’ is that it focuses more on a new breed of heroes and their fight against an entirely new threat in the form of Erzsebet Bathory. The thing here is that there is no longer a Dracula that they need to defeat, although most of the ‘Castlevania’ video games had Dracula as the primary antagonist. This seems odd because Dracula was successfully revived at the end of the original ‘Castlevania’ animated series. So, (how) will Dracula return in ‘Nocturne’?

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Dracula was brought back to life thanks to the Infinite Corridor and the Rebis, which was created by the joint efforts of Death, Dracula’s generals, and Saint Germain.
  • While Trevor Belmont successfully destroyed the Rebis, Dracula and Lisa were still brought back to life and lived a happy and quiet life together.
  • Dracula might return out of curiosity about the endless night and the Vampire Messiah responsible for it.

Dracula and Lisa were given a second chance in life

The storyline of ‘Castlevania: Nocturne’ would always be a direct sequel to the events of the original ‘Castlevania’ animated series, which had four successful seasons. Of course, while ‘Nocturne’ follows the story of Richter Belmont and his fight against Erzsebet Bathory, who was successful at plunging the world into eternal darkness, we know that there might be a connection between ‘Nocturne’ and its predecessor. And Dracula might be a common denominator.

In season 2 of the original ‘Castlevania’ series, the trio of Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard successfully defeated and killed Dracula. However, the next two seasons allowed us to see several characters trying to bring Dracula back to Earth using the power of the Infinite Corridor, which could open a portal to other realms, including Hell itself.

It was in season 4 wherein Varney (who was Death in disguise) manipulated Dracula’s generals and Saint Germain into doing his bidding. He wanted to bring Dracula back from Hell because he needed to feed on the death that Dracula was set to cause on Earth. And using a Rebis, the ultimate alchemical creation, was the only way for him to ensure that Dracula would continue to kill people.

A Rebis is an artificial hermaphrodite with the qualities of a man and a woman. Death wanted to trap Dracula and Lisa in the Rebis so that Dracula would go insane while he and his beloved were sharing the same body.

Trevor, however, successfully destroyed the Rebis before Dracula could take complete control over it, and it was believed that Dracula and Lisa were plunged back into Hell when Saint Germain placed the Infinite Corridor portal behind the Rebis before Trevor destroyed it.

However, after Death’s defeat, it was revealed that Dracula and Lisa were both given a second chance in life when they woke up on a field on Earth. They didn’t know how or why they were alive, as not even Dracula had a theory regarding their second chance in life.

But they made sure to make the best of this second chance by spending it together by traveling together and settling on an English town called Whitby, which was barely inhabited and was almost always dark.

In that regard, at the end of the original ‘Castlevania’ series, Dracula was alive but no longer the same bloodthirsty and warmongering vampire he used to be. He was still a vampire in every sense of the word. Likely, he was still the strongest vampire in the entire world. But being with Lisa was the only thing he wanted in his life, so he never returned to his castle or tried to tell Alucard that he was alive all this time.

How Dracula could make a return in ‘Castlevania: Nocturne’

As mentioned, Dracula was alive at the end of the original ‘Castlevania’ series. But the events of ‘Castlevania: Nocturne’ doesn’t even have him as one of the main characters. He was only mentioned in passing a few times but never appeared in the series. This begs the question of whether or not he is still alive in ‘Nocturne,’ considering that more than 300 years have passed since his resurrection.

We don’t know what happened in the 300 years that passed, but Lisa likely died a final time as Dracula was never too keen on turning her into a vampire. Lisa was the only one who could make Dracula turn away from his evil deeds, but it is unlikely that Dracula went on another rampage.

It is also unlikely that another Belmont went on a quest to kill Dracula in the 300 years separating ‘Castlevania’ and ‘Castlevania: Nocturne.’ As such, there’s a good chance that Dracula could still be alive in ‘Nocturne.’

In ‘Nocturne,’ word was spreading about Erzsebet Bathory’s growing influence as the next vampire leader. The vampires were even calling her the Vampire Messiah, as she was likely the first true vampire leader since Dracula’s time. And because she drank the blood of Sekhmet and became a god among the vampires, she was able to become strong enough to create an eclipse and plunge the world into eternal darkness.

If Dracula is still alive, it is unlikely that he wouldn’t have heard of the coming of the Vampire Messiah. It is even more unlikely that he didn’t notice that the world had been plunged into eternal darkness. This means he probably has to wonder what happened to the world and who this Vampire Messiah was.

We already know that Alucard returned in the final scene of ‘Nocturne’ as he is now looking to help Richter and the main characters in their fight against Erzsebet. But we don’t know how Dracula fits into all of that, considering that he was always regarded as a villain.

There’s a good chance he will appear in a short cameo scene involving him and Erzsebet. We don’t know if Dracula is still interested in taking his place as the king of the vampires. Still, we know that he was never too interested in this role in Castlevania because he was more of a man of science than an actual ruler. And he didn’t even want to wage war on humanity before the Church murdered Lisa.

As such, it is difficult to see Dracula going up against Bathory in a power struggle because the animated version of Dracula was never someone hungry for power and glory. But if he would actually appear, we’re guessing it would be a scene involving him and Alucard because the father-and-son duo still have to patch things up after the events between them in ‘Castlevania.’ As to whether or not Dracula and Bathory would duke it out, that’s something that we aren’t really sure of.
