Dune: Director Denis Villeneuve Teases The Upcoming Part Two
Denis Villeneuve, known for critically acclaimed movies Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune, is now gearing up to start the production on Dune: Part Two, the anticipated sequel of last year’s epic sci-fi spectacle which was recently nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture of the Year.
In an interview with A.frame, the official news site of the Academy, Villeneuve already teased that the sequel is more cinematic, that he feels deeply inspired, and that he cannot wait to go back to work. You can check the full quote below:
“The second part of the story is definitely more cinematic, so there’s numbers of scenes that I can’t wait to attack. That’s my favorite part of the book, so it’s going to be a lot of fun – and I’m deeply inspired […] It’s different, because it’s like going back to a country where I know the language. I’m working mostly with the same crew, so it is going back to revisit old friends. Thank God the first part was a nice experience, so I don’t have to convince anyone to come back. Everybody is coming back with a big smile.” — Denis Villeneuve for A.frame
Villeneuve also talked about Zendaya’s role in the sequel. Spider-Man and Euphoria star played Chani in the original movie. She spent only one week on the set on the first film, but Villeneuve promised that her role in the sequel will be expanded.
“I had so much fun working with her [Zendaya on the first film] that I decided to add more days and started to improvise things with her. I think she’s really a mesmerizing and really magnetic presence on camera. All of my cast were deeply committed and enjoyable and nice people. I had a huge cast and we were all waiting for the person that would be… how can I say [it]? The a**hole in the group. But – it didn’t happen!” — Denis Villeneuve for A.frame
Dune was released last October as the first part of the planned two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name. The movie grossed $400 million worldwide, and it didn’t take long for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to announce Part Two, which is set to be released on October 20, 2023.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part One is starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.
Dune has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards. The award-giving ceremony will be held on March 27, 2022.
