Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss two other characters from the series, two skilled Mages who debuted during the First-Class Mage Exam and will have more appearances later. Both of them were members of Denken’s 13th Group and fought against Frieren’s group for a Stille. They are Richter and Laufen, and in this article, we are going to tell you all you need to know about the two of them as they appeared in the series.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Laufen and Richter are both secondary characters introduced in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. They are a Third-Class and a Second-Class Mage, respectively, and both were members of Denken’s party.
  • Laufen is a Third-Class Mage who is known for her speed. She doesn’t seem to be as calculated and cold as Denken and Richter, but they collaborated closely, and Laufen used her skills to help them.
  • Richter is a Second-Class Mage who is quite powerful and seems to have a very close relationship with Denken, as the two of them seem to be friends and close collaborators.

Richter is a skilled Second-Class Mage close to Denken

The two members of Denken’s party have not been explored in detail yet, so we have a limited number of information we can work with. But, we can combine what we know from the manga as well, and while we are not going to spoil most of the series for you, you are going to find out some interesting details about these two characters, starting with Richter, the one who seems to be closer to Denken.

Richter is a young man who is a Second-Class Mage and who seems to be on very friendly terms with Denken. The series hasn’t explained the details of their collaboration yet, but more information will be unveiled later, so just be patient, and it will all be clearer. He seems to be a quiet and very composed person; he doesn’t speak much, and he seems to share Denken’s scheming personality or, at least, he is loyal enough not to contradict his plans; he also seems to respect Denken a lot, which makes sense, since Denken is a truly skilled and knowledgeable Mage, regardless of his personality.

Not much has been revealed about his magic, but we can confirm that his signature type is earth magic; his name means “judge” in German, so it is not connected to his spells. His signature spell is called Earth Control Magic: Balgrant, and it allows him to control the earth and use it for both offense and defense, but as you can understand, he is more versed in defensive magic. He is also able to use an unnamed repair spell, which confirms that he is a skilled and versatile Mage.

As we’ve said, we won’t be spoiling his story here, so this is all we are going to tell you here, as we are going to continue with Laufen’s story; the rest of Richter’s story will be revealed in the anime, soon, or you can read more about him in the manga.

Laufen is one of the fastest Mages in the story

Laufen is a Third-Class Mage, and she is the only female member of Denken’s team. She doesn’t seem to be as underhanded and scheming as Denken, and her personality seems to be much more open and caring; this was best seen when she suggested taking care of the bodies of the Mages killed by the Geisel, to which Denken reacted with cold reason, saying that it wouldn’t make much sense doing such a thing.

Her story hasn’t really been explored so far, but we do know that she is quite skilled. She is quite fast, and it seems that she can use her mana to increase her speed; her name means “running” in German, so it is related to her ability. She was, in fact, able to reach Frieren’s party in no time when they revealed themselves before Denken and Richter. She also seems to be skilled in combat, suggesting that she has some martial arts training or something of the like. As said, we’re working with limited information here, as we don’t want to spoil her story from the manga before it is revealed in the anime.

It is unknown how skilled she is with spells, but the core of her abilities is the folk spell known as Jilwer. This is a spell that belongs to a mountain tribe in the southern lands, and this is how Laufen is actually able to move at such incredible speeds. The details are not known, but with this spell, Laufen was able to be on the same level as some powerful Second-Class Mages. Denken initially dismissed her as a novice, although he did think she was useful, it turned out that she was quite skilled and that she wasn’t really a novice but rather a very skilled mage.
