Frieren: What Are the Geisel? Meet the Human-Killing Birds!
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss something different – a species of monster from the series known as the Geisel. Although they look like birds, the Geisel are actually monsters and are exceptionally dangerous, with several of them causing a lot of trouble during the First-Class Mage Exam. So, what are the Geisel, and why are they so dangerous? Keep reading this article to find out all you need to know!
The Geisel are human-killing bird-like monsters
The world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is one of the most beautiful and magical fantasy worlds seen in the animanga lore. The landscapes and the numerous magical creatures seen in the series are wonderful. In this article, we will talk about a specific type of creature, a monster to be precise, that we’ve seen in the series. This creature looks like a bird, but it is much more dangerous and frightening than you might think. They are called Geisel, and we are now going to tell you all you need to know about them.
The Geisel were first introduced during the first part of the First-Class Mage Exam in Frieren. It happened so that Frieren had to face and subdue one with her old folk magic, which was enough to save her life. The Geisel are very dangerous monsters, and while they’re not as creepy as the Einsam or the Chaos Flowers, they are certainly as dangerous as both these species. As you can see based on the picture above, they are large bird-like creatures with white feathers, a pair of hellishly red eyes, sharp claws, and a very sharp beak, as well as two horns protruding from their heads. They also have a long tail.
And if you might think that the Geisel are simply large animals, they are actually classified as monsters, and knowing how they hunt their prey and how brutal they can be, it makes complete sense. Namely, the Geisel are also capable of using magic and they use it to lure their prey in. They cast spells on corpses, and then if someone touches or moves that corpse, they attack immediately, clawing and tearing at their unsuspecting prey with their sharp talons. This is a trick they often use, and it is quite successful.
As Denken’s party learned during the first part of the First-Class Mage Exam, the Geisel can be ruthless; the party encountered several bloodied corpses scattered around the threes in the forest, and we learned that the Geisel were responsible for this brutal massacre, showing just how dangerous they can be. On the other hand, when not hunting for food, the Geisel can be quite charming creatures. They also seem to react to mana, and if they encounter someone whose mana is not high, they might not even notice them, or if they do notice them, they might not attack them.
The final fact is unclear, but such a situation did happen in the series. Namely, while Frieren’s group was hunting for a Stille, Frieren sat near a small surface of water and suppressed her mana as much as she could. Before a Stille arrived, two other creatures came close to her, with one of them being a Geisel. Interestingly enough, the Geisel did not attack her – it simply drank a bit of water and disappeared, showing that they act more on instinct than anything else. They are not really ruthless beasts when they’re not hunting for prey, which is important to note.
And that is more or less it. This is what we know about the Geisel and their importance for the series, as we have presented you with all the facts that we know about these monsters from the series, so we hope we’ve helped.
