Frieren: Who Is Eisen? Meet the Dwarf of the Group!
The characters we’ve seen in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End are truly amazing. Although Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a Japanese work, the authors behind the project have tried to create a fantasy world familiar to both Japanese and Western fans of the series. In this article, we will discuss one of the main characters in the series, Eisen the Dwarf, who is the only member of the original group, save for Frieren, who is still alive in the present timeline. In this article, you will find out all the important details about him.
Eisen seemed to be cold and distant, but he was a true friend
When the original heroes of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End first appeared at the beginning of the series, Eisen was introduced as the Dwarf of the group of four that defeated the Demon King. He did not talk much, and when Himmel discussed how they would all have to find work later, he simply scoffed at the thought. He is not a talkative person, so when he talks, his sentences are usually short and to the point. It was revealed that he and Himmel almost got the group in trouble ten years prior because they were disrespectful to the King, so Frieren and Heiter had to vouch for them.
His role in the story was not that big, but he was nevertheless an important member of the original group, as his raw strength and resourcefulness helped the heroes defeat the Demon King. Once it was all over, he returned to his home. Fifty years after the adventure was done, he was reunited with his former friends when Frieren gathered them all to fulfill her promise, showing them a place from where the meteor shower they had seen 50 years prior looked even more beautiful.
Himmel died of old age soon, and after his funeral, Frieren asked Eisen if he wanted to accompany her on her journey, but he said that he wouldn’t be of much use to her as he was weak and old, and could not hold an axe like he used to.
About 25 years after that and after Heiter’s death, Frieren once again met with Eisen, who was now living alone in his home. He greeted her and Fern and revealed that he knew she was with Heiter, as the two had been exchanging letters for years. This is how he stayed in touch with his old friend.
He then decided to help Frieren find Flamme’s house, where her notes were supposedly hidden. Although he was weak and old, he could still help the two mages on their journey, as they really did find Flamme’s home at the time. After that, they split again as Eisen wished them luck on their journey to Aureole. And that is his story, at least – the gist of it. We did not address all the individual episodes, as our goal was to portray him as a character in general.
Having done that, we can now move on to some other questions about him that we will answer in this article, which will help you understand him better as a character. This will expand what we have said so far and provide more individual details about Eisen and his role in the story.
How old is Eisen?
Interestingly enough, the issue of Eisen’s age in the series is a major one, and sadly, we cannot help you here. We know Himmel’s age, and we could also determine Heiter’s age using some information from the series. But Eisen’s age? We have no clue, although we can also say something about this issue.
We know two important facts. First, we know that Eisen was a Dwarf, which means that his average lifespan is roughly 300 years. We also know that he was at his prime when the original journey ended and that 50 years later, he was already old and weak, as he himself said. So, based on his appearance, we assume that he was around 150 years old when the journey ended, which means that he was in his 200s when Frieren visited him again.
This is not officially confirmed, as Eisen’s age has not been revealed, but it does make some sense. Of course, if the authors reveal more, we will update this article immediately.
What is Eisen’s race?
As far as Eisen’s background is concerned, we know that he is a Dwarf. So far, humans have been the most common race in the series, alongside Demons, so we assume that Dwarves are either really secluded or not that common, like Elves, who are not commonly seen in the world of Frieren.
He has all the typical aspects of a Dwarf as described in Western fantasy work, including short stature, a thick beard, and a warrior’s outfit. Dwarves are generally more resilient and stronger than humans, and they are also much faster than humans. They also live longer than regular humans – around 300 years – but not as long as Elves. This is why Eisen outlived all of his fellow adventurers save for Frieren.
How powerful is Eisen?
The series hasn’t really explained Eisen’s powers to us, but some scenes have revealed that he was indeed a powerful character, probably the strongest (physically) in the group; sure, Himmel was the leader, and he had the skills, but when it came to raw strength, Eisen was definitely the strongest one. This is why he refused to travel with Frieren after Himmel’s death, as he commented how he had lost his former strength.
Still, when we saw him 20 years after that scene, he could lift a large boulder and was so fast that he could basically walk on water, despite his old age, which proves that he was amazingly strong. You can imagine how strong he was in his prime when he could do all of that when he was, as he himself said, weak and old.
He wielded a large battle axe with great proficiency and with great ease, which is also a sign that he was enormously powerful in his prime.
