Frieren: Who Is Himmel? Everything You Need to Know About the Original Hero!

The characters we’ve seen in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End are truly amazing. Although Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a Japanese work, the authors behind the project have tried to create a fantasy world familiar to both Japanese and Western fans of the series. The article you are reading will deal with one major character from the series, Himmel the Hero, as we will tell you everything you need to know about the original hero of the story and his fate in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
Himmel was a true her in every sense of the word, and he was far from ideal
Himmel’s story was very important for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, which makes sense knowing that he was called Himmel the Hero. He was actually the leader of the original Hero Group that was formed by the King and tasked with defeating and killing the Demon King, a task that the four of them completed after a 10-year-long journey.
It was stated in the story that Himmel began the journey when he was 16 years old, meaning that he was 26 when it all ended. Based on the appearances of the other characters, as well as the facts we know about their ages, he was most likely the youngest member of the original hero group. Still, he was nevertheless a proper leader who held them all together.
Although it was due to his and Eisen’s lack of respect at the beginning of the journey (as they angered the King) that the whole group was almost disbanded, Friere and Heiter sorted things out so the four of them could continue adventuring together.
Himmel was a true hero. He was very idealistic and firmly believed in the virtues of heroism, which is why he dedicated his whole life to helping others, and the traces of his heroic deeds could be seen worldwide. On the other hand, he did like the fame that came with the status, which is why he also spent a lot of time posing for statues and enjoying his status of hero, but no one really minded, as he had absolutely no ill intentions there.
He also cared a lot about his friends and was very loyal, as we could see from his reactions and the flashback scenes that Frieren and the others had. Despite being the only true hero in the group (Heiter wasn’t a true hero until much later in life; Frieren helped because she thought it was the right thing to do, but she wasn’t a proper hero; Eisen is… well, Eisen), he was the first to die, as you will be able to read in the next section of this article.
What else is there to tell about Himmel? Well, the story will reveal more about him in the future, as more details and flashbacks will be seen in the series, but we don’t want to spoil too much for you here.
We can tell you that Himmel was a very nice person, and despite his imperfections, he really was someone you could rely on to help you. He also knew his friends and knew that they would, despite their different personalities, come together to help others. Their shared journey taught them that, and he was the one to enforce it properly.
This is why he was so happy to see his friends once more before he died, i.e., why he was so happy that Frieren returned to fulfill her promise 50 years later, even though no one had heard from her in that period of time. He was old and weak, but he accepted, and it seemed that the happiness he experienced and the beauty he witnessed signaled that his life was fulfilled, and he simply died. But, he died a happy man, at his friends’ side.
How did Himmel die? How old was he?
So, after their original adventure ended, we know that Himmel went on to “work” as a hero, helping people worldwide. Fifty years after they split, Frieren reunites the group for one last adventure – to see the meteor shower once again, but this time from a different place. When she meets Himmel again, he is now a very old man with no hair and a thick white beard. Although he is not the hero he was anymore, he agrees to reunite with the group for one last adventure. And it was truly his last.
We know that Himmel was, as we’ve said, 26 years old when the original journey ended. Since the meteor shower takes place every 50 years, he was 76 years old when the group was reunited for their last adventure. After seeing the meteor shower, Himmel died soon after of old age, at the age of 76, and that is how his story in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was concluded.
What was Himmel’s relationship with Frieren?
Although this question will be the topic of a separate article in which we will analyze their relationship in more detail, we have to say that this is definitely a significant plot point in the series. Namely, although the adventures of the original Hero Group have been shown to us only via flashback scenes, it was apparent that Himmel felt something for Frieren. While Frieren did seem to care for him as well, the situation was quite complex.
First of all, there was the fact that Frieren was an Elf, while Himmel was a human. When Himmel died of old age, Frieren still looked the same despite being over 1,000 years old. Secondly, as an Elf, she was very cold and emotionally distant, and while she wasn’t evil, she was not the perfect partner for a romance.
Himmel seemed to be aware of all of this, and considering Frieren and his emotions for her, he accepted it. And he always seemed to have the expression of someone who had loved someone but was aware that their love could never turn into a relationship. It is definitely complex, and with the authors not providing us with any precise details, we cannot give you a precise answer, but we have stressed out the importance of this aspect of Himmel’s story.
