Frieren: Who Is Mut & Why Is He so Similar to Stark?

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss another character whose role is that of a secondary character but who has a symbolic connection to Stark because of the similarity of their stories. In this article, we are going to tell you all that you need to know about Mut, Lord Ordern’s younger son, whose story is very similar to Stark’s story when he was a young boy.
Mut is Lord Ordern’s younger son and his only child at the moment
Not long after being “recruited” by Lord Ordern to play his late son, Wirt, Stark went for a walk with the nobleman, who showed him around his estate. While they were walking, they saw a little boy practicing with a wooden sword, and Lord Order soon introduced the boy as his younger son, Mut. He explained that Mut was practicing his stances and even told the boy how he should practice, and the boy confirmed he would improve on that.
Now, as far as Mut’s own story is concerned, the anime did not reveal much so far. We know that he is the late Wirt’s younger brother and Lord Ordern’s second child, as well as the nobleman’s current heir. He is still childish, but he is a hard worker; praise can get to his head, but he will still practice and know to be focused when needed. He was described as not having his brother’s talent but still being a very hard worker, which is more than useful in such a situation.
We can only assume that he had a good relationship with his brother and that he now has a healthy relationship with his father, but not much is known about the boy, so there is not much that we can tell you about his life. What we can tell you is how his story influenced Stark.
Stark saw a younger self in Mut, but the latter seems to have a much happier story than Stark had
Namely, if you remember, Stark was born in a warrior village and also had a very skilled and talented older brother, Stoltz, who was a brilliant warrior. Stark’s father adored Stoltz, while considering Stark to be useless because – while he was just a small boy – he wasn’t as talented as Stoltz. Stoltz was there to support the young Stark and he trained with him, but he still wanted to be praised by his father as well.
So, when Stark saw Mut practice his stance and heard Lord Ordern’s say that Mut was not as talented as his late brother, he thought that Mut had a rough time just like he did. But he soon heard Lord Ordern praise his son – Ordern reaffirmed that Mut was not as talented as Wirt, but he said that the boy was a hard worker and that the effort he puts into his training is something that he will always be able to rely on. He also said that Mut would become a better knight than himself.
Stark reacted positively to this, as he was happy that Mut did not have such a rough time as himself, but he told Ordern to tell all of that to Mut. Ordern then replied that he did, but that it had gotten to the boy’s head so he stopped trying; Stark laughed and said that it was, indeed a problem. Later, after their task was done, they saw Ordern practicing with Mut, thus confirming that the nobleman really did care for the little boy.
And that is the connection between Mut and Stark. Their stories are similar, but Mut seems to have a happier version of Stark’s story, as he is genuinely loved by Ordern, who also helps him a lot. This was yet another great character-building moment in the story.
