Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss another character whose role is that of a secondary character but is wholesome enough for us to tell you more. The character in question is Übel’s older sister, who was seen briefly in the series and whose sewing had a profound influence on her magic later on. Who is she and what do we know about her? Keep reading to find out!

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Übel is one of the more important and interesting secondary characters in the series, but her private life and her family background have not been explored in detail in the series.
  • We do know that she has an unnamed older sister, although her face or name has not been revealed in the series. The two of them seemed close when Übel was young.

Übel has an unnamed older sister who is good at sewing

Übel is undoubtedly a very intriguing character in many aspects, as we could’ve seen over the course of the story. And while she is undoubtedly a side character in the overall story, she is incredibly interesting and has proven herself to be quite important. Sadly, the authors did not reveal too much about her past, but some details came to the surface over time and we have even found out something about her family. As it turns out, Übel has an older sister and in this article, just like we did with Sein’s brother and Ehre’s grandfather, we are going to tell you about Übel’s sister and explain how important she is in Übel’s story in general.

The story actually starts with a two-year flashback, to when Übel attended the Second-Class Mage Exam. During the second part of the exam, which was conducted by Burg, she was able to breach his “Immovable Cloak” and not only injure Burg but also kill him, as she used her Reelseiden with too much power. Because she killed Burg, she was ultimately disqualified, as Sense explained to her. Still, Sense asked her how she – an inexperienced Third-Class Mage – was able to kill Burg. Übel then explained the secret of her Reelseiden.

RELATED:

This is when we first see a very young Übel accompanied by her older sister. The sister’s face is never shown, nor is her name revealed, but we do know that she had the same hair color as Übel. The latter then confirmed that when she was little, she used to often watch her sister sew. She herself has never tried it, because she was clumsy, but she enjoyed watching her sister do it and would observe her with visible amazement.

Her sister, to be honest, did not do anything special – she simply cut through the fabric with a pair of scissors and then continued the process as expected. There wasn’t much to it, really, but Übel was still fascinated by it. She also liked the sound of cutting. But why is this so important, then? Why did such a simple and everyday action influence Übel so much? Well, it actually has to do with Reelseiden.

Although we have explained how the spell works in detail in a separate article, we are going to go over it briefly here. Namely, Reelseiden is a spell that can slash through almost anything. The main concept is that if Übel is able to imagine slashing through something, she will be able to do it; if she cannot visualize herself cutting through something, she won’t be able to do it. This is a very instinctive approach that breaks away from the traditional logic used by Mages in Frieren, which is why the spell is so dangerous.

This approach was actually influenced by Übel’s experience with her sister. As magic is the art of making the imaginable real, Übel realized that she can cut through anything that one expects to be cut, like the cloth her sister used to cut through while sewing. This is why she was able to cut both Burg (as his “Immovable Cloak” was just a piece of fabric) and Sense’s Perfect Replica (as her hair was just hair). And that is how her sister influenced her and why she is such an important figure in Übel’s life in general.
