Frieren: Who Was Flamme & How Powerful Was She?
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss another character who will certainly play a bigger role later in the story, as her own story is closely related to Frieren’s story in the manga. The character we are talking about is the mage Flamme, and this article will reveal everything you need to know about her.
What happened to Flamme in the manga?
In the fourth episode of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Frieren introduced us to the character of The Great Mage Flamme. Initially, not much was known about her, but as the story progressed – even more in the manga – we discovered some details about this highly intriguing character. In this article, we will present these details to you as you will find out everything there is to know about Flamme and how her story ties into the story of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
So, before we start, a short introduction is in order. While journeying with Fern, Frieren once again meets her old adventuring companion, the Dwarf Eisen. He takes the two in, and while they’re talking, Frieren asks him whether he needs help with anything; he then reveals that he is looking for Flamme’s notes and asks them to help him. Frieren reveals that most of Flamme’s notes are actually fakes, but Eisen is adamant that the ones he is looking for are real and states that Heiter has found a clue to their whereabouts while doing research in the Holy City. Frieren and Fen then help him find them, and after a short adventure, the three of them are actually able to find it relatively soon.
As they discover the notes, we also learn more about Flamme. Flamme was a female mage, a beautiful woman with red hair, considered one of the greatest mages in history. This is why she was nicknamed The Great Mage Flamme. Her name means “fire” in German, which seems to be the main language that the authors used; conversely, Frieren’s name means “freezing” in German.
Frieren initially described Flamme as a complex and manipulative person who was prone to exaggerating. She told the others that Flamme liked “playing her like a fiddle” and that she was unpleasant. And while it has not been revealed why Frieren said those things about her, we know that it wasn’t completely true, as Flamme seemed to be the complete opposite.
As per other accounts, Flamme was a very kind and caring person. As a human, she understood the complexity of Frieren’s situation in the world and tried to be as considerate as possible. The two of them actually met when Flamme saved Frieren as a child and took the young orphan in. She raised her as her own daughter, but she also made her apprentice; Frieren would go on to become Flamme’s best apprentice, and when that fact was revealed, it became apparent that Frieren and Flamme were quite close.
This is how Frieren identified forgeries of Flamme’s notes, as she knew her mentor’s writings well. She could also vouch that Flamme was an exceptional mage, and Frieren’s own skills were proof enough that Flamme was a skilled mage.
So, why did Frieren speak so badly about her, then? Well, we don’t think that there was any ill intention there. It seemed like a childish reaction to us, as Frieren would not admit that Flamme knew her as well as she did. Namely, Flamme properly hypothesized that Frieren would make a grave mistake at one point and that she would want to visit someone who was gone (which came true when Frieren desired to meet with Himmel once again), but also that she would be the one to bring peace to the world (which also came true, as she was a member of the party that defeated the Demon King).
So, what happened to Flamme in the story? She was an apprentice of Serie, another powerful Elven mage who actually took her in on a whim. Serie is an exceptionally powerful and knowledgeable character, so it makes sense that Flamme also became quite powerful in the end. Not much about her life is known except that she saved and raised Frieren. Also, we know that she died at one point since she was a human, but the circumstances of her death have not been explained in the series at this point.
What kind of powers and abilities did Flamme have?
Now that we have presented her story to you, we can also explain her powers and abilities. Still, we have to warn you – not much is known about Flamme’s powers and abilities, and most of the things we will write here are deductions based on other facts we know from her life.
First of all, we know that Flamme studied under Serie. Serie is an enormously powerful Elven mage considered a living grimoire due to her advanced knowledge of magic and spells. If Flamme learned under Serie, there is no doubt that she was one of the most skilled mages in the world, which is something that has been confirmed by other characters as well. Serie wouldn’t have taken her as her apprentice had Flamme not shown enough potential in that field.
Secondly, Frieren is a testament to her skills and abilities. Frieren became an exceptionally powerful and skilled mage, and that in itself is a fact that is relevant when considering how powerful Flamme was. Were she not powerful, there is no way that Frieren would’ve become so skilled as her apprentice.
And that is pretty much everything we know. She was skilled enough to hide her original notes quite well and perceptive enough that Frieren would come for them, looking for a way to find Aureole. Flamme herself has found Aureole, which is an exceptionally important plot detail that we will also analyze in a separate article.
