Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is an anime and manga series that is focused on the adventures of the titular protagonist, the Elf Frieren, and her companions, which consist of the original Hero Group and her current companions. In this article, we are once again going to focus on Frieren and, this time, on her relationship with Himmel, the hero of the original group. Although nothing ever happened between the two of them, it seemed that there were some emotions there, and in this article, we will explain the nature of their relationship in the series.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Frieren is an Elven mage who is the protagonist of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. She was a member of both the original Hero Group and the current group, including her, Fern, and Stark.
  • Himmel was a human who was known as Himmel the Hero. In Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, he led the original Hero Group that defeated the Demon King 70+ years before the current timeline.
  • Frieren and Himmel were never a couple because of the enormous age difference and the fact that Frieren’s personality was completely aromantic. Still, the series implies that Himmel did like Frieren.

Frieren and Himmel were never a couple, but it did seem that Himmel felt something for the Elf

Fans of the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End anime will know that the series is relatively new, which means there is much more to expect from it in the future. The manga has a solid number of volumes, so we can expect the anime to have several seasons, which is great since Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a truly beautiful and comprehensive work. In this article, though, we will focus on the characters rather than the story, as we will explain the nature of the relationship between two important characters in the series.

They are Frieren and Himmel, the two protagonists of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Frieren is an Elven mage and was a member of both groups in the series because Elves live for thousands of years. On the other hand, Himmel was the leader of the original group, the hero, and died 50 years after their journey ended in old age. The two of them were never a couple, but the story hinted at something more than friendship. In this article, we are going to reveal the truth to you. As usual, we are going to start with the personalities of the characters involved.

Although other characters are also included in the narrative, Frieren serves as its main character and serves as the thread that ties them all together. She is a very emotionally reclusive Elf, which is characteristic of her Race and, as the series described, a tendency that has brought the Elves to the verge of extinction. If you truly pay attention to Frieren’s actions in the series, Heiter’s claim that humans just cannot understand the nature of the Elves’ feelings does not seem to be incorrect.

Since Frieren is an elf and perceives time differently from humans, her understanding of time is also quite crucial in understanding her role in the story. She considers a human lifespan to be brief because Elves live for thousands of years, so she cannot appreciate the value of a normal human lifespan. She is quite private and appears aloof partly because she perceives time differently. Specifically, because she perceives time this way, Frieren does not consider a person’s lifespan a significant amount of time.

As a result, she cannot trust others or see a reason to connect with others because, from her perspective, everyone else will die relatively soon. That’s why she comes out as a cold, emotionless person, although she is not. She is also fairly direct in her communication and sincere in general, a trait her acquaintances frequently describe as being cold or harsh.

She may seem emotionless, but she is more sensitive than the average elf, as she wept when Himmel and Heiter died, which isn’t typical of her race. In addition, she respects her friends and regrets that she didn’t get to know them better, so she is looking for their souls and does not want to make the same mistake with Fern.

However, she possesses a feeling of loyalty and reliability, as she can be trusted. Despite being unable to express it adequately, she also had great affection for her former friends. She maintained her word when she said she would reunite them 50 years after the conclusion of their adventure. Subsequently, she respected Heiter’s wishes for Fern to become her apprentice and for alcohol to be poured on his grave when he passed away. She also returned to the village in time to defeat Qual, which Himmel predicted she would do.

As far as Himmel is concerned, he was – more or less – a typical human hero. He was a true adventurer and embodied heroism in every way imaginable. He was idealistic, brave, ready to help, and extremely loyal. He became the leader of the original Hero Group and led them on a 10-year-long adventure that ended in the defeat of the Demon King.

During that time, Himmel proved that he was a real hero in every sense of the word, which is something that his companions also confirmed. In fact, his heroism even inspired Heiter, the “corrupt priest” (as Frieren liked to call him), to change his ways and t take care of Fern when he found her, as he wanted to do something good for someone else as well. After their journey ended, Himmel continued to “work” as a hero, helping people and villages worldwide, until he became too old to continue doing it.

While Himmel did all of this because he was an idealist, he also enjoyed the attention and the fame; he liked seeing statues of him. He once even posed for a long time to an artist, significantly delaying their journey. On top of that, he quarreled with the King at the beginning of the journey. This shows that he was far from perfect, making him so specific and special.

So, what kind of relationship did the two of them have? Well, as far as the canon is concerned, they were just friends. It would’ve been quite impractical to make them a couple, really, as Frieren is 1,000+ years old, despite looking like a teenager, and while Himmel looked her age at the beginning when he was an old, bald man, she still looked the same so it would’ve probably been strange.

While that is the state of the canon, many scenes pointed to the fact that Himmel did have feelings for Frieren, but due to her closeted nature, nothing ever came out of it; Frieren probably never even realized Himmel’s emotions. Himmel understood that, and he accepted the fact that they would never be a couple, which is why we don’t have any details for you, but from what it seems, Himmel really did like Frieren, even though she was difficult to approach.
