Garp vs. Akainu: Who Would Win & Why?

One Piece is an anime that certainly has its fair share of strong and powerful characters. And while its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is most often in the center of our comparisons, this time we’re going to focus on two other characters. In this article, we are going to analyze two powerful Marines, Monkey D. Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, and Akainu, to determine who the stronger Marine is among the two. Keep reading to find out more.
In this very close contest, Monkey D. Garp would ultimately come out as the winner against Akainu. If the two of them fought at full power at the peak of their abilities, Garp’s experience and his “D.” would ultimately help him overcome Akainu’s Devil Fruit power, which is his strongest weapon. In all other aspects, Garp is the more powerful of the two.
The rest of this article will further elaborate on the above-given answer, as we are going to compare Monkey D. Garp and Akainu in more detail. Through several categories, you are going to see who the stronger of the two is and why our answer is like it is, i.e., why Monkey D. Garp would ultimately able to defeat Akainu if they were to fight.
Physical powers
His fists are also incredibly powerful. In fact, they are so powerful, that one punch of his was able to hurt Luffy and make him feel pain and in the War he managed to hurt Marco in his Phoenix form with a single punch, this is because he is an expert user of haki. Also, his alias “Garp the Fist” is due to this quality and he calls it “Fist of Love”.
He claimed to have crushed eight mountains during his training to face Chinjao. In addition to his legendary strength, Garp has extreme stamina and an absurd tolerance for pain, as shown when he was attacked by Captain Morgan and was able to withstand the cut from Morgan’s ax without issue or pain, however. this can be attributed to him being asleep during the incident (he also did not wake up).
He also fell from the execution platform and despite this, he managed to get up with few injuries despite receiving a blow before the fall that would also damage him to the joy and surprise of other marines who were glad that he was still alive after that fall and still had enough strength to prevent to Jesus Burgess attacking Sengoku when he was fighting with Blackbeard and managing to knock out and surprise his strength.
Garp has shown to possess incredible speed (possibly greater than that of CP9’s Soru), as he was able to dodge all of the Straw Hats and reach Luffy to knock him awake. It is evident that Whitebeard respects Garp’s strength as he mentioned during his talk with Shanks. It should also be noted that Garp is not seen carrying any weapons, aside from the cannonballs he throws, implying that he is more likely a hand-to-hand fighter like his grandson.
He is a great teacher as he was able to make Koby and Helmeppo into capable fighters in a short amount of time and was also selected to be an instructor. He was also the one who trained Luffy and Ace, making them strong enough to set sail on their own. Gol D. Roger said that he and Garp nearly killed each other on many occasions. The fact that Garp could fight Gol D. Roger implies that he is one of the strongest characters in the series.
During the War on the Summit, Sakazuki displayed tremendous physical strength, such as when he stopped the massive Newgate bisento with a single leg. He is, altogether, a powerful hand-to-hand fighter who combines the abilities of his lodge to gain enormous destructive power. Among his achievements is the defeat of Inazuma, Ivankov or Jinbe and, above all, his victory against Kuzan in their duel for the rank of admiral of the fleet, although both suffered serious injuries in it.
Sakazuki has enormous durability in combat, as shown by having withstood two very strong earthquake blows at Whitebeard’s point-blank range—one of them split the Marineford land in two—and being able to continue actively in the war, subsequently fighting against Sakazuki, the commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates and two former Warlords of the Sea, Crocodile and Jinbe.
His durability also extends to attacks imbued with Busoshoku Haki, as neither Marco nor Vista were able to deal any significant damage to him with it. Sakazuki also has extremely acute hearing, being able to hear underwater activity before the war against Whitebeard began.
Since we never actually saw the full extent of Garp’s powers, this one is based on hearsay, but based on what we know, we cannot really determine the winner in this category, which is why we are splitting the points.
Points: Garp 1, Akainu 1
Devil Fruit
Monkey D. Garp is one of the rare characters that are on such a high level of power, but don’t have any Devil Fruit powers. Monkey D. Garp never are a Devil Fruit in his life, which is why, ultimately, we don’t have anything additional to say as far as this category is concerned; at least when Monkey D. Garp is in question.
Akainu possesses the Magu Magu no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that grants him the ability to turn his body into magma and manipulate it at will. As a Logia-type fruit user, Akainu can let physical attacks pass through him unharmed and can only be harmed with the help of Haki, the Sea Granite, having his guard down and by his weakness. elementary.
Apparently, Akainu knows about Haki and found some ways to avoid Haki attacks, even after Marco and Vista sliced him in the neck with Haki-infused attacks. His ability is naturally more powerful than Ace’s pyrokinetic abilities, since the heat of magma is stronger than that of fire. He finally manages to kill Ace thanks to the natural superiority of his power.
Akainu’s Devil Fruit allows him to go after the likes of Emporio Ivankov and Jinbe with minimal effort. During the 10-day battle on Punk Hazard for the position of Admiral-Commander-in-Chief, Akainu once again demonstrated the furious power of his Devil Fruit, as he turned part of Punk Hazard into a veritable furnace.
Since Monkey D. Garp never really ate a Devil Fruit in his life, it makes sense for the points in this category to be allocated to Akainu, as the Marine actually ate a Devil Fruit.
Points: Garp 1, Akainu 2
Haki
As a Vice Admiral, Garp is capable of using Haki. Garp is capable of using Observation Haki. When Koby awakens Observation Haki, Dr. Fishbonen recommended that Koby ask Garp how to master it, suggesting that he has enough experience with it to guide others. Garp has shown extremely proficient skill in the use of Armament Haki, being able to injure Luffy several times, overcoming his rubber body.
He is able to coat his fist with haki, allowing him to counter and even crush Chinjao’s haki-enhanced drill-like head thirty years ago, showing superior dominance against an already powerful Armament Haki user. During the Battle of Marineford, he managed to hit and damage Marco, despite the latter being in his regenerative Phoenix Form.
Garp uses a technique called Ai Aru Kobushi, which is a simple but powerful blow to damage Luffy by hitting him in the head, imbued with Armament Haki to hurt him. It has been shown that he also used it on Ace during his childhood.
It was stated that all vice admirals possess Haki, so one rank above vice admirals, Akainu can use this ability as well. He was seen using his Armament Haki to nullify Whitebeard’s attempts to destroy the execution platform by creating, with the help of his fellow admirals, a pairing shield of their three Haki. He also has Observation Haki.
It was difficult to ascertain the winner here, but as Akainu focuses more on some other aspects, we deduce that Garp should be the better Haki user, as Haki techniques are his actual fore.

Weapons
Until now, Garp has been seen throwing cannonballs (including a gigantic one). His fists could also be considered a weapon.
Sakazuki seems to have some knowledge of swordsmanship, as in his youth, he was seen wielding a red katana.
Due to a general lack of information, this category was quite difficult to determine, as well. Still, Garp has been seen using more powerful weapons, so we ultimately give the last point to him.

Monkey D. Garp vs. Akainu: Who would win?
And while Monkey D. Garp and Akainu have never fought one against the other, their history from the manga and the anime allowed us to determine, via the points, that Garp would come out on top in this one. And we honestly do think that. Sure, Akainu is powerful and he doesn’t play fair (which is why almost everyone hates him, in the first place), but Garp has enough experience and intelligence to know who he’s dealing with.
Akainu’s secret weapon in this fight would be his Devil Fruit power, something that Garp doesn’t posses. Still, his Devil Fruit, however powerful it might be, isn’t even nearly enough to fully incapacitate Garp. With his skills and his mind, Garp would definitely find a way to neutralize the powers of Akainu’s Devil Fruit, and that would ultimately be enough.
If we add to that the fact that he is basically superior to Akainu in every other aspect, as well as the fact that Garp actually has the “D.”, Garp becomes the clear winner here. We’ve all seen how resilient and determined Luffy is, and if you know that Garp is his grandfather who took care of him and raised him in one aspect, it becomes clear that Garp is enormously powerful and would ultimately defeat Akainu.
