‘Gotham’ Star David Mazouz Picks His Dream DCU Role and the Casting Could Be Perfect

Few actors get the chance to grow up on screen quite like David Mazouz did during his years playing a young Bruce Wayne on Fox’s ‘Gotham.’ Watching him transform from a grieving 13-year-old into a masked vigilante over five seasons made him one of the more recognizable faces associated with the character heading into adulthood.

Now, years after that show wrapped, Mazouz is making it clear he isn’t done with Gotham City just yet. Rather than hoping to reprise his old role, though, he’s set his sights on an entirely different member of the Bat Family within James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe.

Speaking in a new interview with Love It Film, Mazouz revealed exactly which character he’d love to play next. “I would love to be a member of the Bat Family,” he said. “Since I was on Gotham, it’s been a dream to play Damian Wayne.”

Damian Wayne holds a unique place within Batman mythology as the biological son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, raised initially by the League of Assassins before eventually joining his father as Robin. His trademark personality, often described as arrogant, obstinate, and difficult, has made him one of the more complex and divisive versions of the character in DC Comics history.

James Gunn has already confirmed plans to bring Damian Wayne into live-action, announcing ‘The Brave and the Bold’ back in January 2023 as a father-son story centered on Batman and his son. Gunn has openly cited Grant Morrison’s celebrated Batman run as inspiration for the project and has called Damian his personal favorite version of Robin.

With no official casting news yet for Damian Wayne, fans have spent considerable time speculating about who might eventually land the role, floating names like Aidan Gallagher among others as potential fits. Mazouz’s public interest now adds another name to that ongoing conversation, albeit one with a particularly personal connection to the Batman mythos already.

Having spent years literally embodying Bruce Wayne’s formative years on screen, Mazouz brings a somewhat unique perspective to the idea of playing his on-screen father’s son in an entirely different continuity. It’s a full-circle pitch that plenty of longtime ‘Gotham’ fans would likely embrace, even if it requires some mental gymnastics to separate the two connected but distinct versions of the Wayne family.

Since ‘Gotham’ concluded in 2019, Mazouz has continued working in both theater and film, while also pursuing academics, graduating from Stanford University in 2023 with a degree in Economics and Psychology. That combination of continued creative work and formal education reflects an actor who has deliberately built a career and identity beyond the role that first made him famous as a teenager.

Now in his mid-twenties, Mazouz would be stepping into a very different kind of Batman-adjacent role if Gunn’s DC Studios ever came calling, trading the tortured origin story of young Bruce Wayne for the sharper, more combative energy that defines Damian’s version of Robin.

With ‘The Brave and the Bold’ still in early development and no confirmed casting for Damian Wayne, Mazouz’s comments remain speculative for now rather than any indication of an actual audition or offer. Still, his willingness to publicly campaign for the role adds his name to an increasingly crowded conversation about who might eventually take on one of DC’s most complicated Robins.

Given how much scrutiny surrounds every casting decision within Gunn’s new DC Universe, fans are likely to keep watching closely for any further updates on Damian Wayne’s eventual live-action debut.
