As the new year begins, anticipation builds for the launch of a fresh cinematic universe centered around DC characters, known as the DCU. While the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) concluded with the relatively successful ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ the overall track record of the movies has been less impressive. In response, James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken charge of the revamped DCU, bringing with them a slew of upcoming projects. One of the most highly discussed among them is ‘Superman: Legacy,’ which marks the true inception of the DCU, even though ‘Creature Commandos’ will be released first.

Gunn, known for engaging with fans on social media, particularly enjoys dispelling rumors and leaks. Recently, he shared insights into how he landed the role of directing ‘Superman: Legacy.’ Contrary to expectations, Gunn revealed that Warner Bros. approached him with the opportunity. However, he hesitated to accept until he was certain he had the right story to tell. Seeking input from trusted individuals, Gunn pitched his idea, leading to the creation of ‘Superman: Legacy.’

The upcoming movie, ‘Superman: Legacy,’ helmed by James Gunn and produced by Peter Safran, delves into the early years of Superman’s life as a reporter. The narrative follows Superman’s quest to reconcile his Kryptonian roots with his human family in Smallville, Kansas, marking the authentic commencement of the DC Universe, according to Gunn and Safran. Gunn, assuming the role of co-CEO of DC Studios in November 2022, prioritized Superman, resulting in the announcement of a new film slated for release on July 11, 2025.
