Can you make smooth stone stairs out of every stone type?

The only stone types you can make Smooth Stone from are Red Sandstone, Sandstone, and Quartz. As an alternative, you can opt to make Polished Stone stairs or in the case of Cobblestone, simply Stone stairs.

The polished stone alternatives available are Polished Andesite, Polished Diorite, Polished Granite, and Polished Deepslate. Their texture is very different from what smooth stone can offer but should suffice instead of Cobblestone, which rarely looks nice in a build.

How to make polished stone and stairs?

To make polished versions of diorite, granite, andesite, and deep slate, place the 2×2 blocks in your crafting table to get 4 Polished Stones. You can avoid using the crafting table by using the stone cutter,r which will make it faster since you only need to place one block to get one polished stone block.

To make the stairs on the crafting table, you’ll need six polished stones of your choosing. Place them in a staircase-shaped manner which will yield you four stairs. In the stone cutter, you only need one block to make one block of stairs which means you’re better off using a stone cutter. You’ll be losing two blocks for every four stairs that you make.

Stairs and their uses

Intuitively, stairs can only be used as stairs in Minecraft, but that’s not the case. You see, stairs are an excellent alternative to roofs in Minecraft, along with slabs. They’ll make your roof look more roof-like and are sure to make your build look better.

The reason stairs are used is that the player doesn’t have to jump when climbing them, but the same can be said about stairs made of slabs. Because of this fact, you can make an alternative version of smooth stone stairs in Minecraft using smooth stone slabs

Furnace vs. blast furnace

The only way to make Smooth Stone in Minecraft is by using a regular furnace. You can use lava buckets, coal, wood, charcoal, blaze rods, and much more as fuel sources. To make smooth stone, you’ll need to smelt the Cobblestone twice. The first time will be to make stone, while the second will be to make smooth stone.

Stone cutter vs. crafting table

As we mentioned, you can use a stone cutter and a crafting table to make a smooth stone slab, but what should you use to make it? If you make the stairs in a crafting table, you’ll get four stairs out of 6 blocks of stone, but if you make them with a stone cutter, one stone will yield one stair, which would mean that using a stone cutter will be more efficient than using a crafting table.

You’ll need three blocks of stone and an iron ingot to craft a stone cutter. Then, arrange the stone blocks in the center of the crafting table and place an iron ingot in the center above them. To use a stone cutter, place a block on the left single-item grid, and the stone cutter will automatically show you what you can make with that type of stone or wood.
