‘House of the Dragon’ Just Crossed a Streaming Record HBO Max Didn’t See Coming
Prequel series rarely get a second chance to win over skeptical audiences, let alone a third. ‘House of the Dragon‘ has spent three seasons proving it could be the exception, riding the goodwill of ‘Game of Thrones’ fans through one rocky stretch and back into favor again.
That journey has not always been smooth. The show’s second season split viewers and reportedly strained the relationship between author George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal, a tension that lingered even as the series prepared to return this summer.
Season 3 changed the conversation almost immediately, and now the numbers back it up in a big way. According to Collider, ‘House of the Dragon’ has officially surpassed 150 days on HBO Max’s U.S. charts, a milestone that reflects just how long the series has held viewers’ attention across its run.
The stat comes on the heels of a finale that critics and fans have called one of the strongest episodes the show has produced. The Season 3 premiere, “Salt and Sea, Fire and Blood,” debuted on June 22 and drew 21.5 million global viewers within its first three days, setting the tone for a season that averaged more than 33 million global viewers per episode.
The finale, “The Treasons at Tumbleton,” aired on August 9 and pulled in roughly 21 million global viewers in its own three-day window, just a 2 percent dip from the premiere. It also landed a 9.1 out of 10 user rating, making it one of the highest-rated hours in the show’s three-season history.

As impressive as the 150-day run is, the timing comes with a small catch. ‘House of the Dragon’ has just slipped from the top spot on HBO Max’s charts, ceding the number one position to the new superhero series ‘Lanterns,’ created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King.
Even so, holding a chart position for 150 days in the U.S. is no small feat for a series built entirely around events that predate the original ‘Game of Thrones’ by roughly two centuries. It speaks to how thoroughly Season 3 managed to win back viewers who had grown lukewarm after the previous season’s more divisive reception.
The bigger question now is how the show closes things out. HBO has confirmed that Season 4 will be the final chapter of ‘House of the Dragon,’ with the season expected to consist of eight episodes and arrive sometime in 2028.
That announcement adds a bittersweet edge to the current wave of momentum. The series is entering its home stretch at what appears to be its commercial and critical peak, giving the creative team a real audience to satisfy as it wraps up the Targaryen civil war that has defined the story since Season 1.
For a franchise that once looked shaky heading into its third season, crossing 150 days on the charts is a strong note to close on, even with a new contender briefly stealing the top spot. Whether ‘House of the Dragon’ can maintain that same level of interest through a two-year wait for its final season remains to be seen, but the finale’s reception suggests fans are firmly back on board.
After Season 3 brought fans back around, how do you feel about House of the Dragon now?
