Ending a series built entirely around dragon warfare comes with a very specific kind of pressure. Fans watching the Targaryen civil war spiral toward its inevitable conclusion have spent years wondering just how big the final chapter of this saga can actually get.

Season 3 already delivered plenty to process, with Rhaenyra ascending to the throne, major character deaths, and new threats emerging within the ongoing conflict. That finale confirmed the show will wrap with a fourth and final season, leaving fans with roughly two more years to wait before seeing how it all ends.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has now offered a clear answer to one of the biggest lingering questions about that final chapter. “There will certainly be more dragons, I can guarantee you that,” Condal told Empire, confirming that the show’s signature creatures will play an even bigger role as the Dance of the Dragons reaches its bloody conclusion.

Beyond the promise of more dragons, Condal also offered fans an update on where things stand behind the scenes. He confirmed that pre-production will continue through the later months of 2026, with filming set to begin at the start of the new year.

“We’ll start again filming early 2027, and I’m really looking forward to the Last Dance, as we’re calling it on our side,” he said, referencing the internal nickname the production team has given to the final season. That timeline puts Season 4 on a similar production schedule to previous seasons, even as the story itself grows in scale.

Fans facing another lengthy wait between seasons will have some material to hold them over in the meantime. ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is set to return for its second season next year, giving Westeros fans another entry point into Martin’s world while ‘House of the Dragon’ finishes production.

Two-year gaps between seasons have become fairly standard for big-budget prestige television, but for a show of this scale, the extended timeline reflects just how much work goes into pulling off its signature dragon battles and elaborate set pieces. Given how ambitious Condal has described Season 4’s plans to be, that additional time may prove necessary.

Condal’s comments arrive at a moment when the stakes for the Targaryen civil war have never been higher. With Rhaenyra now sitting the throne and the conflict escalating on multiple fronts, promising an even greater dragon presence signals that the show’s climactic battles are only going to intensify from here.

For a series that has leaned heavily on its dragons as both spectacle and narrative weight, more of them in the final season suggests Condal intends to go out with as much scale as the story demands. Given how much devastation dragons have already caused across three seasons, an increased presence in the finale points toward an especially brutal endgame for House Targaryen.

With filming slated to begin in early 2027, ‘House of the Dragon‘ Season 4 is still likely more than a year away from reaching screens. That gives Condal and his team ample time to execute the vision he’s described, one built around delivering the biggest dragon presence the series has offered yet.

Whether that translates into new dragons entering the fray, existing ones playing larger roles in the fighting, or something else entirely remains to be seen. What’s clear is that Condal isn’t shying away from raising expectations as the show heads into its final stretch.
