Alicent Hightower is a character in the new smash-hit TV series House of Dragon. The character originated from the works of George R.R. Martin, in the book Fire & Blood. She is an important player in the important historical event known as the Dance of the Dragons, as the matriarch of the “greens”. In this article, we’ll take a look at Alicent’s children.
Alicent Hightower has four children. She is the second wife to King Viserys I, with whom she has three boys and one girl. Her firstborn is Aegon Targaryen, next is a girl Helaena Targaryen, her second son is Aemond Targaryen, and her third son is Daeron Targaryen.
In the TV series, House of Dragon, Alicent Hightower is portrayed as a morally grey character, someone who upholds herself to high morals, but still won’t stop at anything to achieve her ambitions. All of her children are just as interesting figures as Alicent herself, and in this article, we will see who they are. This article contains major spoilers for the House of Dragon TV series!
How many children does Alicent Hightower have?
Alicent Hightower was born 88 AC to Otto Hightower, and she is a member of House Hightower. At fifteen she was described as precocious, and at age of eighteen clever and lovely. When she first came to court, she took care of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, and it is written that he died while she was reading to him. Later on in her life, she became the second wife of King Viserys I.
With her husband, she had four children. And in the book, Fire & Blood, she is described to be slender and graceful even after having four children. She gave birth to all four children in rapid succession. First came Aegon Targaryen, a long-awaited son for King Viserys I. Almost immediately after came their first and only daughter, Helaena Targaryen. After Helaena, they had two more sons Aemond and Daeron Targaryen.
Who are Alicent Hightower’s children?
Aegon Targaryen
Aegon Targaryen is Alicent Hightower and King Viserys I’s first-born son. His life was complicated from the stars, as his very existence challenged Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s claim to the Iron Throne. He is a dragon rider, and his dragon is Sunfyre. When he was younger he really didn’t have a wish to be the King, before his mother brainwashed him into thinking their family is in danger. After his father’s death, he was crowned King Aegon II. This trigged a bloody battle between the “greens” and “black”.
His most notable achievement is killing Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon Meleys, but this left him unable to walk until the end of his life. In the middle of his time as king, he burned Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen alive and made Sunfyre eat her. His reign as king was short, and he was usurped by the supporters of his nephew, Aegon the Younger- he died of poisoning.
Helaena Targaryen
Helaena Targaryen is the second child of Alicent and King Viserys I, and their only daughter. She was also a dragon rider whose mount is Dreamfyre. In the books, she is described as an agreeable and cheerful lady. Later in life, following the Targaryen customs, she marries her brother, Aegon Targaryen. That means she eventually becomes Queen, after her mother.
She gave birth to three children: the twins Princes Jaehaerys and Princess Jaehaera, and their youngest son, Prince Maelor. The next part of her story is truly tragic. After Aemond kills Lucerys Velaryon, Prince Daemon sends killers to murder one of Aegon and Heleana’s children. The events that transpired next will be known as Blood and Cheese.
The killers made Queen Heleana choose which of her sons should die. She choose Maelor because he was only two years old at the time. She never forgave herself for this act, she spiraled into madness, and in the end, she committed suicide by jumping out of Maegor’s Holdfast.
Aemond Targaryen
Aemond Targaryen was the second son of Alicent and King Viserys I. When he was younger, he didn’t claim a dragon right away, but after the death of his Aunt Laena, Aemond claimed her dragon Vhagar, who was the biggest dragon living. When Joffrey Velaryon finds out Aemond decided to claim Vhagar, he and his brother get into a fight with Aemond, and Aemond loses an eye. He is known for striking first blood in the dance of the Dragons, by killing Lucerys and his dragon Arrax. He is a ruthless warrior, almost like his uncle Prince Daemon. When his brother, Aegon II, becomes king, Aemond gets the title of Prince Regent and Protector of the Realm. He is killed by Daemon, when he stabs him with his sword, Dark Sister, in his missing eye socket.
Daeron Targaryen
Daeron Targaryen is the youngest child of Alicent and King Viserys I. He was born the same year as Rhaenyra’s first son, Jaecerys Velaryon. Like his other siblings, he was also a dragon rider, whose mount was Tessarion. When he was young, Jaecerys and Daeron shared everything together, and they grew fond of each other. But, this didn’t stop him to take his mother’s side in the dance of the Dragons, as a member of the “greens”. During the Battle of the Honeywine, Daeron helps his Uncle Ormund Hightower to win the battle, with the help of his dragon.
After the victory, he is knighted with the Valyrian sword Vigilance and is named Daeron the Daring. Later, he helped the “greens” by razing territories to all those who refused to submit. The details of his death are unknown, the only thing we know is that he died sometime during the Second Battle of Tumbleton. In the TV series, we still haven’t seen this character.
