Approximately 9% of Netflix subscribers share their passwords with their children that are living in a distant location or studying abroad, while around 25.6% of subscribers share passwords with family members living in different households. Another study found that 27% of Netflix users prefer to watch content on another person’s account in general, rather than arranging their own subscriptions.

It’s been estimated that between 31% and 54% of the global Netflix audience actually watch content without spending a single dime on subscription fees. As a result, it is very clear that there are far more Netflix fans than there are paid subscribers. According to a statement from Netflix on Cnet:

“Account sharing as a percentage of our paying membership hasn’t changed much over the years, but, means it’s harder to grow membership in many markets. While we won’t be able to monetize all of it right now, we believe it’s a large short- to mid-term opportunity.”

Netflix has had no major issue with this sort of practice and has openly stated that they allow it to a degree. But, the company is now focused on finding ways to attract brand new customers to the platform – many of which may come from the existing pool of Netflix watchers that are non-subscribers.

Why Is Netflix Losing Subscribers?

Netflix’s share price dropped massively after they announced losing around 200,000 subscribers in 2022’s first quarter alone, which occurred from January through until March. According to The Guardian, the total paid subscriber count is expected to drop even further – by approximately 2 million – within the next few months.

This year’s drop in Netflix’s paid subscriber count may not seem like much considering that the company already has hundreds of millions of eyes glued to the platform. But, it was the first net loss for Netflix in over a decade and has sparked immense panic among dedicated fans and shareholders.

The sudden spike in monthly fees may have had an impact on the sudden dip in Netflix’s subscriber counts overall. Some of Netflix’s subscribers in the United Kingdom are now paying a 3rd more than they did less than 2 years ago.

But, Netflix has stated that they do not necessarily think payments are to blame for the dip. However, Netflix did acknowledge user practices as possible influences, described in the following statement:

“It’s increasingly clear that the pace of growth into our underlying addressable market (broadband homes) is partly dependent on factors we don’t directly control, like the uptake of connected TVs, the adoption of on-demand entertainment and data costs. We believe these factors will keep improving over time, so that all broadband households will be potential Netflix customers.”

That being said, the company has stated that the current global calamity in 2022 is another potential influence. This is especially considering that they suspended services in Russia, which led to a loss of around 700,000 accounts alone.

Will Netflix Stay Popular?
