A new mystery comedy is getting strong attention ahead of its release. The Sheep Detectives, a film led by Hugh Jackman, is now one of the highest-rated wide-release movies of 2026. It currently holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on early critic reviews.

The film tells a simple but unusual story. A group of sheep try to solve the murder of their shepherd. The idea may sound strange, but many critics say the film handles it in a smart and engaging way. It is aimed at families, but it does not talk down to younger viewers. Instead, it mixes a mystery story with clear themes that both kids and adults can follow.

The movie is directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin. It is based on the novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann. Along with Hugh Jackman, the cast includes Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, and Emma Thompson. The sheep characters are voiced by actors such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein.

Early reactions from critics show a mix of praise and some criticism. Nikki Baughan from Screen International wrote, “While those emotional beats make more of an impact than the somewhat strained murder mystery at its heart, The Sheep Detectives nevertheless proves to be a diverting, whimsical yarn.” This highlights how the film’s emotional side works better than its central mystery.

Harry Stainer from Empire Magazine shared a similar view, saying, “These furry detectives are no Hercule Poir-ewe, but this eclectic, well-voiced herd takes on the case with enough earnestness to make it a yarn worth telling.” He points to the voice cast and tone as key reasons the film works.

David Jenkins from Little White Lies also noted that the mystery is not always the main focus. He wrote, “The whodunit element of the story feels like something of an afterthought, though Nicholas Braun as a pratfalling Clouseau-like local inspector who’s massively out of his depth is a nice touch.”

Some critics were more direct in their praise. Rendy Jones from Rendy Reviews said, “The Sheep Detectives is a rare cuisine among McDonald’s Happy Meals.” Brandon Judell also pointed out the film’s ending, writing, “There is a happy ending, of course, with a sentimental closing that will have you comprehend Little Bo-Peep’s anguish the next time you hear her rhyme. Also, I was unable to guess the killer’s identity, always a plus.”

Linda Marric from HeyUGuys focused on one of the film’s deeper ideas. She wrote, “One of the film’s most interesting aspects is its subtle but clear vegetarian undertone. Without ever feeling preachy, it invites viewers to reconsider how animals are viewed and treated by the meat industry.”

Not every review is positive. Roberto Tyler Ortiz from Geek Vibes Nation gave the film a lower score, saying, “The Sheep Detectives feels like a solid idea that never quite develops into something memorable.” This shows that while the film is widely liked, some critics think it does not fully reach its potential.

The film is set to release in the United States on May 8, 2026, through Amazon MGM Studios. Sony Pictures will handle its release in international markets. With strong early reviews and a unique concept, it is already becoming one of the most talked-about films of the year.

The success of The Sheep Detectives shows that audiences are open to new and unusual ideas, especially when they are easy to follow and have clear meaning. Not every part of the film seems perfect, but it clearly connects with many viewers. What do you think about this kind of story? Does the idea interest you, or does it feel too strange?
