Is Cell a Saiyan? (& Can He Go Super Saiyan?)

One of the things that we know about the world of Dragon Ball is that Goku and his friends have faced a lot of powerful opponents throughout the years. As Saiyans, Goku and the other fighters tend to have a distinct advantage over their enemies due to the fact that Saiyans seem to have unlimited potential. But back in Dragon Ball Z, they faced an opponent that proved to be incredibly difficult to defeat because Cell also had unlimited potential due to his design. So, does that mean that Cell is also a Saiyan?

Cell’s status as a Saiyan is still up in the air, but the one thing that is conclusive is that he has Saiyan genes due to the fact that he was created using the cells of Goku and Vegeta. But, at the same time, he isn’t a Saiyan because he also has genes from Cell, Piccolo, and King Cold.

The thing about Cell is that he was supposed to be the perfect creation of Dr. Gero and was a complete android in his estimation due to the fact that he had the cells of some of the strongest beings in the universe at that time. Nevertheless, the fact that he is essentially a hybrid means that he isn’t totally a Saiyan. And this is a topic that we are going to go over in detail.

Is Cell A Saiyan?

During the peak of the Dragon Ball Z anime, we saw how Goku and his allies were pushed to their limits by incredibly powerful opponents like Frieza. That was when the Super Saiyan transformation was unlocked, as almost all of the Saiyans at that time achieved this form. And the form came in handy in the fight against the androids during the Cell saga, as this transformation allowed Goku, Vegeta, and the others to fight them well enough.

But while Goku and the others were struggling against the androids, there was another being that was creeping from behind the scenes to achieve his ultimate goal of killing Goku. We are talking about Cell, who started out as an incomplete creature that was created by Dr. Gero to absorb Androids 17 and 18 so that he could become a complete being that was stronger than Goku and anyone else in the universe at that time.

Cell was secretly developed by Dr. Gero to become the perfect android as he created him with the favorable traits of Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza, and King Cold. In fact, he used the cells of these fighters to develop Cell, as he was grown from a single cell with the combined traits of the abovementioned fighters. Cell only became more powerful when he absorbed Androids 17 and 18, as that was when he achieved his perfect form. So, considering that he has the genes of Goku and Vegeta, does that mean that Cell is also a Saiyan?

There is no conclusive word about what Cell actually is. But what we are sure of is that he is a hybrid of different beings, and that’s why he can be a Saiyan but also isn’t a Saiyan. That’s because, as mentioned, he was created using the desirable and favorable traits of five different fighters.

In that regard, two of those fighters happen to be Saiyans, while two of them come from Frieza’s race. The other fifth is Namekian due to the fact that he also has Piccolo’s genes. That would mean that Cell is 40% Saiyan. But that doesn’t prove that he is actually a Saiyan, as he doesn’t have the humanlike and apelike qualities and traits that Saiyans are known to have.

The best that we can say about Cell is that he is a unique creation and was actually an android, as that was what Dr. Gero described him to be. And as far as his status as a possible Saiyan, we can’t make any conclusion regarding that.

Can Cell Go Super Saiyan?

While Cell isn’t completely Saiyan, the thing about him is that he has some of the traits of Saiyans. This goes back to the fact that he has the genes of both Goku and Vegeta, who are two of the strongest Saiyans in history. That means that he has the ability to increase his power and reach incredible levels that are far beyond what he used to be capable of.

Back in the Cell Games, Perfect Cell displayed his ability to reach a power level that’s similar to what a Super Saiyan can reach. He did so when he powered up to his maximum in front of Super Saiyan Goku. Of course, because of his lack of hair, he didn’t exactly become a Super Saiyan as far as aesthetics are concerned. But the striking part was the fact that he had the same golden aura that Super Saiyans tend to have.

Cell didn’t explicitly say that he was a Super Saiyan, but there is a good chance that this was his version of a Super Saiyan transformation, given the fact that he does have the genetics of two powerful Saiyans. And his next transformation was another one that displayed his abilities as a creature with the genes of a Saiyan.

The thing about Cell is that he has regenerative capabilities that allow him to recreate his body as long as his nucleus isn’t destroyed. This is similar to how Piccolo can regrow his limbs and how Frieza seems to still be alive after getting torn to pieces. Nevertheless, Cell’s ability to regenerate allowed him to recreate his body after he self-destructed.

Because of a Saiyan’s ability to increase their power after going through a near-death experience, Cell reached his Super Perfect form, which he said allowed him to reach the same kind of power level that Gohan had in his Super Saiyan 2 form. In this state, Cell not only had the golden aura of a Super Saiyan but also had the electric sparks that distinguish a Super Saiyan 2 transformation from a regular Super Saiyan form. This implies that this is Cell’s version of a Super Saiyan 2, as he said it himself that he was now as strong as Gohan’s own Super Saiyan 2 transformation.
