Is Hugh Jackman Really Finished Playing Wolverine?: “It literally does not matter how I answer this”

The release of Deadpool & Wolverine is just around the corner! Early reactions are praising the movie as the best thing to happen to the franchise and the MCU as a whole. However, amid the positive buzz, one question lingers: is this a one-time return for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine?

Recently, Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy discussed the film with Collider, addressing various topics including the future of the character. As you might know, Jackman had retired from the role after Logan, which was intended to be the perfect farewell for Wolverine.

It seems that Logan provided a fitting conclusion to Wolverine’s story, and even Feige attempted to dissuade Jackman from returning to the role for previously planned projects. So what does the future hold for Jackman? He addressed this question candidly.

Jackman admitted that he feels like a “liar” because, despite swearing off the role before, he is now back and having the time of his life filming this movie.

Hugh, you have famously said in the past, “I’m done playing Wolverine.” So, are you done playing Wolverine?

REYNOLDS: That’s just his safe word. That doesn’t mean anything.

JACKMAN: It literally does not matter how I answer this, Steve, because I’m clearly a liar. But what’s so great about my lie is I believed it. Fully. I fully believed it.

REYNOLDS: That’s the best liar.

JACKMAN: So, I’m a borderline sociopath.

REYNOLDS: Just a symphony of red flags.

JACKMAN: So, it doesn’t matter what I say. But I can tell you, Steve, I’ve actually never had more fun, ever, playing Wolverine than I did in this movie with these guys.

REYNOLDS: That first day, when Hugh walked out in that suit, I’ve never seen a crew fall silent that way. That was one of the most amazing, emotional things I’ve ever seen.

While there’s no guarantee that Jackman won’t don his yellow suit again in future projects, we must consider the actor’s age.

Regarding the future of the Deadpool franchise within the MCU, Reynolds was candid:

It was really, genuinely meant to be a true one-off. Life is hard for a lot of people out there, and it’s been that way for a long time. For people to walk out of the movie theater feeling like they just had the best two hours of their entire life, something that is unexpectedly moving, but still retains all that audacity and wild subversion that you come to expect with this character and this world– And then there’s just an enormous wrestling match with expectations and stuff like that. It’s always a wild thing to see. I’m so thrilled Marvel is as thrilled as they are. We are our hardest critics, so for me, this is the best movie I’ve ever been a part of.

Reynolds has repeatedly emphasized that Deadpool & Wolverine won’t be merely a setup for another film, and we believe him.
