Kevin Feige Advised Hugh Jackman Against Returning as Wolverine
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ stands out as the highly anticipated Marvel cinematic release of the summer, and it’s the only one on the horizon. This film holds significance for several reasons. Firstly, it marks Deadpool’s introduction to the MCU. Secondly, it aims to rebuild confidence in the studio. Lastly, it promises to feature many characters from Fox’s original X-Men franchise.
However, the original plans for ‘Deadpool 3’ differed, and initially, Hugh Jackman didn’t intend to join the Merc with a Mouth in his latest escapade.
In an interview with Empire, Hugh Jackman shared that Feige advised him against reprising his role in the franchise because of how ‘Logan’ concluded, with the character exiting on a high note.
‘Logan’ continues to be praised as one of the finest Wolverine films, with its ending being clear-cut and leaving little room for interpretation. Fortunately, a new concept introduced in the MCU paved the way for Jackman to return in a different capacity. The Wolverine we’ll see this summer in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is not the same as the character who met his end in ‘Logan.’
“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back,’” Feige said. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo.’”
Feige seems to have a preference for respecting character deaths and similar story conclusions. He’s often mentioned that bringing Iron Man back from the dead is off the table. Thankfully, advancements in storytelling will enable Jackman to reprise his role without altering anything that happened in ‘Logan.’
It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines. Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don’t have to screw with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.
