Is Lord Beerus a Cat? His Feline God Race Explained!

Beerus is single-handedly one of the most interesting newer characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. Introduced at the end of Dragon Ball Z and featuring prominently in Dragon Ball Super, Beerus is a character who has become a fan favorite in a very short period of time and has been attracting the attention of fans ever since. One of the questions surrounding Beerus is his race, i.e., whether he is a cat or something else. In this article, we are going to tell you whether Beerus is a cat and explain his feline god race in Dragon Ball.
Beerus’ race is a race of humanoid cats. Based on Sphynx cats, they resemble ancient Egyptian gods. Notable members of this race are the Hakaishin of Universe 7, Beerus, and the Hakaishin of Universe 6, Champa. While this has not been officially confirmed, among fans it is assumed that Dyspo, a soldier from the Universe 11 serving in the Pride Troopers, is also a representative of the race.
The rest of this article is going to focus on the character of Beerus and his race. Not much information is available about it at this moment, but we have compiled everything that is known about it. We are also going to tell you a bit about the best-known members of the race scattered throughout the universe.
Beerus’ race explained
Beerus’s race is an unnamed species of humanoid aliens with feline features that exists in Universe 6 and Universe 7. The gods of destruction Beerus and his twin brother Champa are the most important and well-known members of this race; they are also the only confirmed canon characters from this race.
Members of this breed are usually humanoid in appearance and have purple skin, but they have features and traits similar to the Sphynx or Sphynx cat breed; this is because Toriyama’s pet cat is a Sphyx cat. The corpulence varies according to the individual, as in the case of Beerus who is of slim build, or Champa who is of the obese build.
Due to the immense power displayed by both Beerus and Champa, it appears that this race possesses a high level of power or at least great potential for combat. Nothing else is known about the race as of the time of writing.
Who are the known representatives of Beerus’ race?
In the rest of this article, we are going to tell you about the known representatives of this race, both canon and non-canon, as well as a character who is by many considered to be from Beerus’ race, but that has not been confirmed (yet).
Beerus
Beerus is officially referred to as the God of Destruction Beerus because of his position in Universe 7, Beerus is a character who was introduced in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, where he is the main antagonist, and who appears in the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime as the main character. He occupies the position of God of Destruction of the entire Universe 7, being the place where the story of Dragon Ball takes place.
Akira Toriyama’s inspiration for creating this character came from an old Sphynx cat named Debo who lived with him (just like Toriyama’s previous cat was the inspiration for Korin). After the cat became seriously ill, the vet stated that he did not have long to live, but the cat miraculously recovered and the vet joked that he might be some kind of devil.
Beerus’ physical design also takes some inspiration from ancient Egyptian deities, particularly Seth and Sekhmet. Seth is a jackal-headed humanoid and is the god of the desert, storms, darkness, and chaos in ancient Egyptian culture. Sekhmet is a lioness-headed humanoid who is the Egyptian goddess of destruction, believed to cause disease. Beerus seems to be sharing a lot of the same traits as Sekhmet.
He is very playful, like most cats. Also, he has a certain obsession with food. His catlike mannerisms and variety of facial expressions separate him from the more evil antagonists in the series. However, Beerus manages to get upset very easily over trivial things, as shown when it is said that he lost at hide and seek or when Majin Buu did not want to share some pudding with him.
He relies on his overwhelming power, and not without reason, as he proved to be a formidable opponent for the Z Fighters. Despite his enormous power and his task as God of Destruction, he is very sociable, friendly, and polite when on the go. He has a very tense relationship with his brother Champa (the God of Destruction of Universe 6) since they are very used to competing and sometimes fighting, being able to generate enormous destruction in the Universe if it were not for his assistants Vados and Whis that stop them.
Despite this, Beerus apparently feels some empathy towards Champa, as he wished Super Shenlong demanded that the Earth of Universe 6 have the same cultural advancement as the Earth of Universe 7, so that Champa could enjoy his food. On the other hand, he is sometimes somewhat hypocritical.
This is seen when he complains that Majin Buu fell asleep before the Universal Martial Arts Association Tournament and the Tournament of Strength, being that he has much longer periods of sleep, which Whis mentions, after which Beerus goes silent. He tends to have very long sleep periods and yet, after thirty-nine years of sleep, he considered that he had only taken a nap, implying that he usually sleeps much longer than that.
Champa
Champa is a character from Dragon Ball Super. He is the God of Destruction of Universe 6 and the twin brother of Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7, his twin universe. Champa is a tall, robust being, and like Beerus, he has the appearance of a cat, with pointed ears, having a ring in his right ear. He wears red, black, and gold Egyptian clothing with circular decorations, which correspond to his angel, Vados.
Unlike Beerus, Champa has a more ordinary, friendly, and careless attitude. Champa, like his brother, is very easy to make angry, but Champa proves capable of controlling himself much better, something even Whis acknowledged. He seems to be a lot like Beerus, but with more disadvantages, since his love for food and sleeping is much greater than Beerus’.
He is headstrong, arrogant, and most of all a sore loser, as he didn’t want to lose against Beerus and even bent the rules to win. He proves to be cold and evil after killing Guarana and his soldiers out of necessity.
The others do not interest him too much since he always treats his angel Vados badly and is ignorant at the same time, because he does not see that she wants to help him stop being fat, and also proves to be so by believing that it would be easy to beat Universe 7 for seeing that Goku was slow to catch the egg that he threw at him, ignoring that he had a heavy uniform.
Shandy (non-canon)
Shandy, also known as God of Destruction Hero, is a male God of Destruction and member of Beerus’s race, who serves as the Hero-type avatar of the Gods of Destruction for the player in the Dragon Ball Heroes game. Shandy shares numerous characteristics with Beerus, as they are of the same race, although he has large violet pupils and has a more youthful and athletic appearance.
He wears a red God of Destruction uniform similar to Champa’s, though the diamond pattern is the same as Beerus’s. Shandy has great power and combat prowess, as can be deduced from his position and surely from the potential of his race, being able to overwhelm and outmatch Beat even when he is in the Super Saiyan Blue state. He also appears to be slightly more powerful than his partner Keisar.
However, like the rest of the God of Destruction avatars, he has more problems dealing with Beat after having awakened the Ultra Instinct Sign state, as he is now able to dodge and counter all his offensive attacks.
Dyspo (possible)
Dyspo is one of the members of the Team of Universe 11 and one of the most powerful soldiers in the Pride Troopers along with Jiren and their leader Toppo. Dyspo’s appearance is very reminiscent of the unknown species that Beerus and Champa belong to, but more similar in appearance to a rabbit or a hare, even though they are from different universes.
Dyspo has a slim, light purple, hairless build with long, wide ears similar to a Sphynx cat. He has rabbit-like incisors, unlike the finer, catlike teeth of Beerus and Champa. He wears the Pride Trooper outfit. Champa mentions the strong resemblance he bears to Beerus (and thus to himself). Dyspo as a Pride Soldier possesses a great sense of justice which he is proud of, and is in a position to defend at all costs.
He shows concern for his companions, especially his leader, Toppo, and rejects any offer with evil intentions, such as the one Frieza offered him. His thirst for justice is shown once again when he and Kunsi are humiliated at the hands of Son Goku and Hit, however, he is reluctant to do so after Toppo’s warning about putting justice aside in exchange for survival.
Despite not having malicious intentions, Dyspo can also be somewhat cocky, arrogant, and even overconfident in his speed abilities on many occasions; he also tends to underestimate his opponents, which sometimes puts him at a disadvantage, showing an expression of surprise or concern.
Dyspo also appears to be a sore loser, as he was shown to be angry at his elimination, exclaiming “Me of all people!” when he was led into the stands. However, he still accepted defeat in the end. In the manga, Dyspo is less arrogant; an example of this is that he did not get angry upon losing, unlike his anime equivalent.
