Jujutsu Kaisen: Here’s How Inumaki Lost His Arm!
Toge Inumaki from Jujutsu Kaisen, despite not being a central character in the series, is incredibly popular because he is quite quirky and special. Due to his power, he has to speak using codes that won’t harm his friends, making him very popular among the fans. In this article, we will talk about Toge Inumaki, of course, but not about his powers, but his story, as we will reveal more details about a major moment that happened during the Shibuya Incident. Namely, in this article, we are going to explain exactly how Toge Inumaki lost his arm during the Shibuya Incident Arc and what happened to him later?
Toge lost his arm to Sukuna’s Domain, but Akutami has not provided the details
Remember the first episodes, when Itadori just arrived at Tokyo Jujutsu High? Sure, we saw Megumi and Nobara as his fellow classmates, but there was another group of three older students – Maki, Panda, and a white-haired boy.
Well, that white-haired boy is our Toge, one of the most popular characters in the series. Due to his Innate Technique, he has to be careful what he’s saying as his words manifest into actual actions; this is why he has developed a system of speaking that uses completely safe words as codes for something and which he uses to communicate with his friends to avoid hurting them.
Now, Toge is quite powerful, which we have seen, but despite that, he is a secondary character. The main Jujutsu Kaisen series left him in the background pretty quickly, and while Jujutsu Kaisen 0 provided us with more insight into his character, it still wasn’t enough. Now, fans were hoping that Toge might play a bigger role in the Shibuya Incident, but we have to disappoint you – he won’t. In fact, his role was quite reduced, and we actually have Akutami to blame for that, as he couldn’t handle all of his characters that well in his major arcs, as we will see soon.
Namely, the Shibuya Incident was a major event in the series, and while Gojo was sealed away in the Prison Realm pretty soon, the other characters were expected to get more screen time then. While some did, Akutami failed to balance it out, so some major characters received only scraps, and Toge is one of them.
Toge is a fairly important, useful, and popular character, so we don’t know why Akutami simply wasted him here. He appeared very late into the events and arrived to help his friend Yuji, and he dealt with Mahito’s transfigured humans as he allowed Yuji to enter the station. That’s pretty much it until later. We see him observe a group of people who would soon die because they were too close to Sukuna’s Domain Expansion.
And that’s about it. Later, after the incident, we find out that he lost his left arm to Sukuna’s Domain, although that was never really shown. So yeah, Akutami brings in Toge for a couple of panels only to remove his left arm, and that’s it? Well, seeing what he did to Gojo recently, this – retrospectively – doesn’t come off as a surprise, but Toge’s story was definitely wasted in this arc.
So, how did it even happen? Let us first explain Sukuna’s Domain Expansion, as it might clarify things. The name of his Domain Expansion is Malevolent Shrine; it manifests as a Buddhist shrine filled with skulls. Interestingly enough, it doesn’t create a separate dimension using a barrier, like other Domain Expansions, and it also allows those trapped inside to escape, but only if they accept a binding vow.
Sukuna can use his abilities – Cleave and Dismantle – inside his Domain and can set the condition that everyone and everything trapped inside is affected by these techniques, which is how he can kill or injure many people simultaneously. As for Toge, details haven’t been provided, but seeing how his arm was cut off, we assume that it remained within the effective range of Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine when it was activated and that Toge lost his arm like that.
As we’ve said, this is conjecture on our part, as Akutami never provided us with too many details regarding the loss of Toge’s arm, but knowing how Sukuna’s Domain actually works, this seems like a more than plausible explanation that fits the lore and the facts we actually do know.
Why did Toge not heal his arm? Could Shoko or Yuta do it?
Well, this is a question we cannot answer as Toge wasn’t really all that present after the revelation; as far as we’re concerned, he might have done it in the meantime, as he did not participate in the Culling Game and yours truly is actually worried that Akutami is slowly and steadily destroying the plot consistency of Jujutsu Kaisen for reasons known only to him. But that’s a wholly different issue.
Now, supposing that Toge did not heal his arm, we can assume that he either did not want to or couldn’t do it. Why couldn’t he? The only reason we can think of is that Sukuna’s Domain somehow annuls the effects of a Reverse Cursed Technique, but that has not been explained, so we don’t really know. It is also possible that his arm was permanently destroyed, not just cut off, so there’s nothing to reattack.
But, theoretically, both Shoko Ieiri and Yuta Okkutsu could heal Toge, so we’ll have to wait and see if Akutami remembers Toge and provides us with an update on his condition in the future.
