The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen is finally here with Gojo’s Past Arc, and knowing what awaits us in the upcoming episodes, both in the past and the present, we cannot but be excited about what is to come. And while it might seem that this short flashback plot is not connected to the main timeline, there are a lot of such connections, with Master Tengen being a particularly important one. And while we’ve already talked about several aspects related to Master Tengen, this article will also remain in that field, but not directly, as we will focus on the Star Plasma Vessel. In this article, you will find out what the Star Plasma Vessel is and how many there are.
The Star Plasma Vessel is the title assigned to a young woman who can merge with the user of the Immortality technique and refresh that technique. In the context of the story, the Star Plasma Vessel is a young woman who needs to be merged with Master Tengen so that they do not evolve and, thus, maintain the balance in the jujutsu society. The process of becoming a Star Plasma Vessel is unknown, and only two of them have been revealed in the story.
The rest of this article is going to be about Master Tengen, but not about them directly, as we are going to put more focus on the Star Plasma Vessel. We will explain how the Star Plasma Vessel relates to Master Tengen and why this is such an important concept. We will also reveal how many Star Plasma Vessels have been identified and who they are. Be careful, though, as we must inform you that this article will contain many spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, so you have to decide for yourselves how you want to approach it.
The Star Plasma Vessel is an essential concept related to Master Tengen
Master Tengen are, as we know, a character with a relatively important role in the series. Namely, they are responsible for keeping and maintaining the jujutsu society’s barriers; if they were to stop doing that, the world could be plunged into chaos. They also seem to be an extremely powerful entity, which is why the jujutsu sorcerers deem their security important.
But, while Master Tengen doesn’t do much besides maintaining the barriers, they go through a special cycle every 500 years that will end in their evolution or restart. This is due to the special ability that Master Tengen has, called Immortality.
Thanks to that ability, Master Tengen won’t die from old age, but their current body is destroyed after 500 years, which is why it has to be replaced with a new one in order for the balance to remain. But, since Master Tengen won’t actually die if the body is not replaced, they will actually evolve and enter a completely new state of existence, becoming more of a curse than a human, which can be both beneficial and dangerous, depending on the outcome of the evolution. There are two possibilities here.
In the first scenario, Master Tengen’s evolution might be advantageous for humanity because they would continue to be an ally; in the second, the evolution might be horrifying because Master Tengen might turn into a mindless foe of humanity, whom the jujutsu sorcerers would likely struggle to defeat because, in their evolved state, Master Tengen would actually have lost all will and reason and would not know right from wrong in that state.
On the other hand, if the body is replaced, the whole process is avoided, as the whole process is restarted, and the danger of Master Tengen becoming dangerous is avoided for another 500 years.
So, how is this avoided? Well, this is where the Star Plasma Vessel comes in. Namely, in order to avoid evolution and restart the process, Master Tengen needs to merge with a special human called the Star Plasma Vessel.
As far as it is known, the Star Plasma Vessel is always a human who has the potential to refresh Immortality and restart the whole process. As seen in Riko’s case, they do not have to be active jujutsu sorcerers, but it is implied that they can see curses.
As far as their powers are concerned, it is unknown how powerful a vessel has to be, but some vessels are able to communicate between themselves even if the merger has already happened. While the process is seemingly not possible for the user of Immortality, as they are unable to communicate with those they have merged with. The process of becoming a Star Plasma Vessel is unknown, as are all the other details.
As far as it is known, the Star Plasma Vessel has to be a woman, as all the previous ones have been women; this is possible because Tengen was originally a female jujutsu sorcerer. Whether a Star Plasma Vessel is born or created is unknown, as is how a Star Plasma Vessel is actually found, so there are still a lot of mysteries surrounding this specific role, especially since we haven’t seen any merger in the series; it has only been talked about.
Only two Star Plasma Vessels have been identified
Since Tengen originally lived in the Nara period, they are currently alive for around 1,300 years, which means there had to be numerous Star Plasma Vessels in history. Sadly, we don’t know whether only one Star Plasma Vessel exists at one time or whether there are more; the story does reveal them to be valuable, but since the two known Star Plasma Vessels lived at the same time, it is now known whether the title is somehow transferred or if there is more than one vessel at any given time.
But, be that as it may, we can confirm that so far, only two Star Plasma Vessels have been identified by Akutami, and they are:
Riko Amanai
Riko Amanai was a student and the Star Plasma Vessel for Tengen. She initially didn’t give much thought to her life because of some past events, so she waited for the day when she would merge with Lord Tengen.
She started to enjoy herself more daily as she spent time with her friends, especially her bodyguards Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, to the point that she no longer wanted to be the Star Plasma Vessel.
To stop her from being assimilated by Lord Tengen, two criminal organizations, Group Q and the Time Vessel Association, want to put an end to her. After overcoming Gojo, Touji shoots Riko in the head, killing her. Geto launches a fierce attack in a fit of wrath, but Touji stops him, and Riko’s body is delivered to Shigeru Sonoda at the Time Vessel Association facility.
After Touji collects the reward placed on Riko’s head, Gojo engages him in combat and kills him. Following the enemy’s defeat, he retrieves Riko’s body. Tengen found a way to stabilize himself despite her passing.
Yuki Tsukumo
Yuki Tsukumo is a special-grade jujutsu sorcerer, one of four in existence. In the past, she was chosen as the Star Plasma Vessel. She strongly opposes the practice of using children to reset Tengen’s technique, and she has no intention of helping them in any way, despising their passive nature and the ease with which they justify any cruelty.
Her beliefs and focus are on finding a way to wipe out the curses all at once instead of exorcising them when they appear, choosing to evaluate the feasibility rather than the ethics behind it.
Following the Shibuya incident, she takes the side of Yuji and his companions, volunteering to protect Tengen together with Choso. Later, Yuki fights against Kenjaku and, to protect Choso, she gives up on healing or running away and sacrifices herself to try to kill him by creating a black hole, but Kenjaku manages to save himself at the last moment, making her die in vain.
