Jujutsu Kaisen: Mahito’s Origin Explained – How Was He Born?
Mahito is a major villain in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga and anime. An important member of Pseudo-Geto’s team of villains, Mahito caused trouble for the Jujutsu Sorcerers and is infamously known for causing the deaths of Kento Nanami, Mechamaru, and (apparently) Nobara Kugisaki. He is one of the most despised villains in the series (which shouldn’t really come as a big surprise to anyone), and most fans were happy when Kenjaku absorbed and killed him. But, in this article, while we are going to talk about Mahito, we are going to go back in time and reveal to you the origins of Mahito’s story, i.e., how Mahito came to exist in the first place.
Mahito is an exceptionally important character in the story
Mahito is the leader of a group of powerful special-level curses whose goal is to exterminate the human race and a curse born of hatred between humans. Mahito is sadistic and immature and loves to play with human emotions, even when his life is in danger. He believes that life has no value or meaning, and therefore everyone should do what they want. This mentality appears to stem from his ability to sense and manipulate souls, which causes him to see the soul, and by extension, the heart, as nothing more than an object.

His cursed technique is called Idle Transfiguration and allows him to manipulate the souls of himself and others, changing the shape of the body. This allows him to transfigure the bodies of his victims into monsters that serve him, heal his wounds, transform his limbs into weapons, and grant him an unlimited variety of other possible transformations. During the Shibuya Incident, Mahito kills Nanami and, seemingly, Nobara but is then defeated by Yuji with Todo’s help. Before he can be killed, he is absorbed by Kenjaku via Geto’s technique.
The details of his genesis are unknown, but we do know how curses are “born” in Jujutsu Kaisen
As far as Mahito’s origins are concerned, we don’t know how and when he was born. The origins of cursed spirits are generally a mystery in Jujutsu Kaisen, so this shouldn’t surprise fans, as Akutami wasn’t detailed in this aspect. But, he has revealed the general way that all cursed spirits are born, so even without the much-desired details, we actually know how they are created. Mahito is – by no means – an exception, so we can actually provide you with some information here.
So, how are curses in Jujutsu Kaisen born? This was revealed relatively early in the story, and we can explain it. We know that there is cursed energy in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, which can manifest or materialize in various ways. One way it appears in the world is in the form of cursed spirits, who are actual entities that are manifestations of cursed energy. So, how exactly are they created? Well, the exact mechanism is unknown, but cursed spirits are actually manifestations of negative emotions that exist in humans. Sometimes, it’s a negative emotion towards someone or something, sometimes it is fear, anxiety, or the like… whatever it actually is, it is a negative emotion.
Humans with low levels of cursed energy generally cannot see the curses they create, but they can be attacked by them, which is why jujutsu sorcerers exist. And this is the general principle, as we have told you. So, how does Mahito fit in?
Mahito was, like every other curse, born from negative human emotions. In his case specifically, he was born out of people’s hatred for other people, so it could be said that he is an embodiment of misanthropy. This makes sense, seeing how he acts around people and hates them. This is, sadly, all that we know about Mahito’s birth, but at least you know how it happened and what caused it.
