Jujutsu Kaisen: 5 Things To Know about Usami

And while Jujutsu Kaisen is definitely close to being finished, Gege Akutami still doesn’t shy away from introducing new mysteries to the series, confusing and intriguing fans along the way. The most recent Chapter 253 mentioned a character known as Usami. When the question “Who is the strongest Grade 1 Sorcerer?” was asked, several characters answered. Mei Mei, Nanami, and Gojo all had the same answer – Kusakabe – while Kusakabe himself said that it was anyone besides him and Usami. And while Kusakabe avoiding responsibility is nothing new, who the what now is Usami? It’s the final saga… and Akutami is introducing a new character?! Well… it might not be like that, really, so keep reading to find out more.
Fact #1: Usami is somehow connected to Kusakabe’s story
If we go back to Chapter 253, we can remember the first question asked there: “Who is the strongest Grade 1 Sorcerer?” Now, while this fact won’t be dealing with the main answer to this question, all the facts we know about Usami (save for the last one), stem from this question. In his answer to this question, Kusakabe says “Someone other than me or Usami.” While this doesn’t reveal much, it implies heavily that Kusakabe and Usami are somehow related, and based on Fact #5 (see below), it is highly likely that they are close blood relatives.
Fact #2: Usami is a powerful Grade 1 Sorcerer
Going back to the principal question – “Who is the strongest Grade 1 Sorcerer?” – Mei Mei, Nanami, and Gojo all answered that it was Kusakabe. We know that Kusakabe is powerful, but we also know that he is a coward who avoids fighting unless he absolutely has to fight. If he can, he’ll think of a way to get out of a fight. Finally, after the former three answered, Kusakabe himself said that it was someone other than him and Usami. And while Kusakabe running away from responsibility is nothing new, this answer confirms that Usami – whoever they are – is also a Grade 1 Sorcerer, which means that they are powerful.
Fact #3: Usami seems to work as part of a team with Kusakabe
The structure of Kusakabe’s answer doesn’t reveal much, but we can read into it a bit, even if it turns out that we’re not correct in our interpretation. The main question was simple – name one Grade 1 Sorcerer you think is the strongest. Mei Mei, Nanami, and Gojo all gave one name (Kusakabe), whereas Kusakabe suddenly mentioned Usami and himself in the same sentence, seemingly out of nowhere. Why? Well, we don’t really know, but it is highly possible that the two of them work best as a team and that they are a formidable duo, with Kusakabe embodying one aspect (probably defense), with Usami embodying the other (probably offense?), but this is just our theory.
Fact #4: Usami’s identity has not been confirmed yet
Be that as it may, everything we’ve said so far has to be taken as conjecture and not as a fact. Namely, while there is a very solid theory (see below), we don’t really know Usami’s current identity in the series, and everything we’ve said so far is, more or less, our interpretation based on the theory we have decided to use as our starting point. This means that we will have to wait a bit (at least until Chapter 254, potentially even longer) before confirming or rejecting anything we’ve said.
Fact#5: Usami is most likely Kusakabe’s younger sister (theory)
Remember this scene from the manga? It revealed to us that Kusakabe had a younger sister who was in need of Takeru’s support. The sister has not been named yet, but based on Kusakabe’s connection to her, it is very likely that she is, in fact, the mysterious Usami. And while Usami can be a boy’s name too, it is generally a female name in Japan. Usami turning out to be Kusakabe’s sister would make a lot of sense, and it would explain all the holes created by Akutami with this sudden revelation. We don’t know if Usami really is Kusakabe’s sister, but this is a theory that we can stand behind at this point until Akutami tells us otherwise.
