The Shibuya Incident is heating up in the anime adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen, and the real battles, which took place after Gojo was sealed, finally started. While there will be many interesting battles and characters in this arc, we have decided to focus on one specific character in this article. Haruta Shigemo is not a new character to the series, but the Shibuya Incident will finally give him some time to shine, as we will see more of him in action in this arc. And while his story is certainly interesting, this article will be all about his Innate Technique, Miracles, which we will explain to you.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Haruta Shigemo’s ability is called Miracles, allowing him to “store small miracles,” which he erases from his memory only to use as a lifeline later to survive a fatal attack.
  • He ultimately exhausted all of his miracles and ended up dying from being caught by Sukuna’s Domain late in the Shibuya Incident, thus ending his story.

What are Haruta Shigemo’s abilities?

Haruta Shigemo is a curse user allied with Mahito’s group. He is an androgynous boy with a cowardly and sadistic character who loves to pick on the weak. He uses a sword created by Juzo, whose hilt is made of a hand. His cursed technique is called Miracles.

This technique erases small miracles and memories of them from Haruta’s life and stores them in black marks under her eyes. These stored miracles are released when his life is in danger, altering his luck to ensure that he survives otherwise fatal blows. During the Shibuya Incident, he faces Nobara and Nitta before being easily defeated by Nanami. He dies after exhausting his technique and becoming involved in the expansion of Sukuna’s domain.

He was first introduced during the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc, when he was among the curses and cursed users who attacked the school, although he had a limited role there. He was there with Hanami, Mahito, and Juzo, who also created his Hand Sword for him. His first opponent was Utahime Iori, but as he tried to attack her, she avoided his attack. Soon, Nobara and Mai joined in, and he commented how he must be quite popular, seeing how many girls arrived to greet him.

But, as soon as he realizes that Gojo has broken inside the barrier, he flees; he later contacts Hanami, and, seeing how heavily injured he is, he offers to put him out of his misery but is stopped by Mahito. Not long after, the three of them leave.

He reappeared during the Shibuya Incident, where he first attacked all the assistants in front of the first veil, including Ijichi, whom he almost killed. He later entered the veil and wanted to kill Nitta, but as he was fighting Nobara, he was confronted by a furious Nanami.

Although he believed that he would win, he had absolutely no chance against Nanami, who beat him to a pulp and left him unconscious, as he helped his friends and continued further. He reappeared later and met Sukuna in person; Sukuna gave him a chance to survive and leave, but he was caught up in his domain and ultimately died, as we have said above.

While he was fighting Nanami, Shigemo commented on how he would have died had it not been for his power, as Nanami’s attack was too powerful. So, what is this power? Shigemo’s technique is called Miracles, and it allows Shigemo to collect “little miracles” he witnesses (e.g., a clock that has the same digit across all spaces), erase them from his life, and store them as a lifeline. These “miracles” appear as pinkish marks below his eyes, allowing him to survive a fatal attack. So, if he has more of them, he can survive more fatal attacks.

This is how he ultimately survived battling Nanami and why he said that he would’ve died had it not been for his power. But, knowing this, why did he die in the end? Was Sukuna’s domain too powerful? Well, perhaps, but that is not the reason he died. Namely, Shigemo died from Sukuna’s domain because – by that time – he had exhausted all of his “miracles” and there was nothing to keep him alive.

How powerful is Haruta Shigemo?

So, how powerful was Haruta Shigemo in the end? Well, we know that he was a skilled fighter, and his fight with Nobara showed that he was of a higher grade than he appeared. His exact grade has not been revealed, but seeing how he couldn’t even stand a chance against Nanami, he wasn’t that skilled.

He couldn’t even hurt Nanami, he was afraid of Gojo, and Sukuna killed him like he would kill an ant, so objectively, we think that he is probably a Grade 2 cursed spirit, seeing how he was stronger than Nobara, but doesn’t seem like he is stronger than the Semi-Grade 1 sorcerers; he could be a Semi-Grade 1, but we don’t think that’s likely in his case; were he a Semi-Grade 1, he probably would’ve resisted Nanami a bit more, but seeing how Nanami trashed him around, we think that he is a Grade 2 at best.

Sadly, Akutami never confirmed this, so this is just our assumption. If Akutami does reveal some official info (which is unlikely, though), we will certainly update this article for you and reveal the official numbers for Shigemo.
