Leslye Headland Reveals Mother Aniseya’s Origin Is Far More Mysterious Than Was Suspected

One of the most contentious elements of ‘The Acolyte’ centered around the coven of witches residing on Brendok. Introduced in episode 3, these witches possessed the ability to conceive children without male involvement, strongly implying the twins as a precursor to The Chosen One.
Among the prominent figures in the coven is Mother Aniseya. While she did not bear the twins herself—that role belonged to Mother Korin—Headland clarified that it was Aniseya’s power that brought them into existence. Aniseya holds leadership within the witch coven.
Aniseya and the entire coven were depicted with ambiguous morality regarding their actions. They harbored suspicions toward the Jedi and sought to integrate two young girls into their group. Aniseya experienced heartbreak upon Osha’s desire to leave them, yet in her final moments, she acknowledged she would have permitted it.
Fans and some Jedi in the series speculated that Mother Aniseya and the coven might be linked to the Witches of Dathomir. However, the show clarified that Nightsisters typically do not adopt children. In an interview with Screenrant, Leslye Headland hinted at this lack of connection as well.
I guess the best way to put it is I wasn’t in a position to establish that in these eight episodes, so I didn’t do that. My personal opinion is that Aniseya probably originates from one of those cults, the one I won’t name , but that she’s based on the character Lauren from Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, that even at a young age, became essentially the de facto leader of people that believed in her and believed in the religion, I guess you would say, of what she felt around the Force and what she was able to do with her own power. So, the quick answer is that she established her own.
Unfortunately, this suggests we won’t learn more about Aniseya in the season finale, but it does rule out Nightsisters as her potential background. Nightsisters are among the most notable Force users in live-action canon not affiliated with the Sith or Jedi, but they aren’t the only ones.
Screenrant has put forth a theory that Aniseya might have ties to the Jensaarai, a group of Force-users from the Suarbi system. They emerged during the Clone Wars, blending Sith and Jedi teachings under a name that Sith translates to “followers of the hidden truth.” Initially at odds with the Jedi due to misunderstandings and the loss of their founder, they later aligned with the Jedi after the Galactic Empire’s downfall, even sending students to Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4.
