Luffy vs Kaido: Who Would Win?

One Piece is an anime that certainly has its fair share of strong and powerful characters. And while its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is certainly among them, there are some characters that are even more powerful than the cheerful and quirky protagonist of the manga. In this article, we are going to analyze one such character, as we are going to pit Luffy against the powerful Kaido to determine who the stronger pirate is among the two. From what we know in the manga, Luffy is still unable to defeat Kaido at this moment. Kaido is simply the more powerful pirate at this moment, which – as it seems – is a result of his special Haki utilization. Now, it is assumed that Luffy will one day surpass Kaido’s powers, but he simply cannot do it at this moment and that is why Luffy is the stronger character now.

The rest of this article will further elaborate on the above-given answer, as we are going to compare Luffy and Kaido in more detail. Through several categories, you are going to see who the stronger of the two is and why our answer is like it is, i.e., why Kaido was ultimately able to defeat Kaido when they fought.

Physical powers

Luffy is endowed with immense physical strength, enough to lift gigantic boulders and shatter steel with his bare hands. His physical strength derives in part from the workouts his grandfather Garp subjected him to as a child, where he survived critical circumstances and used to face huge ferocious beasts. Even as a child he was able to defeat grown-ups and endure Polchemy’s torture.

His physical strength is such as to overwhelm the strongest fugitives of the eastern sea and to rival even that of the fish-men, as demonstrated in the battles against Arlong and Hody Jones, whose strength was even higher than that of the average of their race. . In particular against Hody, after two years of training, he showed himself clearly superior, so much so that he defeated him despite being powered by Energy Steroids.

Due to his muscle mass, Kaido has enormous physical strength. He managed to capsize nine giant prison ships. Kaido is powerful enough that his single scream caused visible damage to the area around him. One of Kaido’s main strengths is his inability to die; indeed, he suffered seven defeats, was captured by the Navy or enemies eighteen times, was tortured over a thousand times and finally, was sentenced to death forty times. Kaido is as powerful as Charlotte Linlin, being able to fight on equal footing during their fight; like Shanks and Edward Newgate, Kaido and Big Mom were able to split the sky in half after just one hit. So far, no one has been able to stand up to Big Mom, which is highly indicative of Kaido’s power.

There is absolutely no doubt that Kaido is the stronger of the two character in questions. Even in his strongest form, Luffy doesn’t stand much chance against Kaido’s physique and that is why this point goes to Kaido.

Devil Fruit

Luffy ate Gom Gom Devil Fruit which made him rubber, giving him the ability to stretch his body parts and hit enemies from a long distance. Although as a child he had problems in fully controlling his power, after an intense training of over ten years, Luffy was able to use the fruit to exponentially improve his physical strength and his agility, thus making him a dangerous opponent.

Despite his fighting style sometimes appears improvised, it is precisely his creativity that makes him an unpredictable opponent, capable of overturning critical situations by adapting from time to time to combat. His rubber body also makes him extremely durable and immune to marine bullets, normal punches and even electricity.

However, he is not immune to swords and knives, as well as to dehydration or poison, although after the fight with Magellan he becomes immune to a wide variety of these.

Kaido ate the Uo Uo no Mi, Seiryu model, is a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows Kaido to transform into an oriental dragon, in the same way as Momonosuke, the main difference being that Kaido has a gigantic size in dragon form and appears to be in control of his transformations.

He cannot, however, maintain this appearance if he takes too many powerful blows to follow up like the ones Luffy gave him. He is also able to cause lightning by roaring loud enough. Kaido was also shown to be able to lift the entire island of Onigashima and seems capable of moving it all the way to the Flower Capital.

And while Kaido’s azure dragon is enormously powerful, we have decided to give this point to Luffy, as Luffy was, using his Devil Fruit powers, able to force Kaido to revert back to his normal state.

Haki

Luffy was trained by Rayleigh to become an expert Haki user. He knows how to use the Observation Haki, which he instinctively used for the first time against Mihawk, avoiding a swing that would have cut off his arms. He also mastered the Armament Haki at high levels, making it an essential part of Gear Fourth. Using this ability in combination with the powers of his own devil fruit, Luffy is also able to ignite his fists thanks to his friction.

He also knows how to use the rarest form of Haki, the Royal Haki, which is the one he prefers. With it, he was able to knock out fifty thousand fish-men at once. During his confrontation with Kaido, he proved to be one of the very few individuals able to use her to enhance his attacks. His third fight against the emperor also ripped through the sky.

Kaido is proficient in Observation Haki and Armament Haki. He also masters the Royal Haki, as he showed during his fight against Charlotte Linlin, another user of this Haki.

As it was pointed out, Luffy believes that Kaido’s amazing powers stem from his special utilization of the Observation and Armament Haki, and since Luffy is still unable to surpass these powers, this category goes to Kaido.

Weapons

Luffy rarely uses weapons in combat, mostly due to his inexperience and the inability to use them. In his childhood, he wielded a metal pipe and that is probably the most sophisticated weapon he successfully handled. In Arlong Park, Luffy briefly tried to fight with swords but failed miserably.

Kaido possesses a Kanabō, which suits his height; in conjunction with his immense strength, he was able to use it to send one of his subordinates out of his lair and onto Luffy.

As we have pointed out on several occasions, Luffy never wins in this category simply because he doesn’t use weapons. On the other hand, Kaido is a proficient weapons user with a lot of special techniques, so it’s obvious why the point goes to him.

Luffy vs Kaido: Who would win?

And now for the most important and interesting section of our article – the analysis. Here, we are going to use what we have found out about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would (or would not) help them in a fight against each other. Let us continue.

As you can see, Monkey D. Luffy is, at this point, simply not powerful enough to defeat Kaido. Kaido is know as one of the strongest characters in the whole franchise, and his bestial nature is what makes him even more dangerous. And while we cannot deny that Luffy is very powerful, as he has defeated the likes of Doflamingo and has survived a battle with the notorious Blackbeard, Kaido is simply another level when compared to him.

Kaido has demonstrated, in all of his encounters with Luffy, that he is the is the more powerful character of the two. Even at his best, at the time, Monkey D. Luffy was unable to bring down Kaido. He did land some punches, but it was obvious that Kaido wasn’t giving it his best at the moment and when he actually decided to get serious, Luffy was blown away with one hit from Kaido’s weapon. That’s how powerful the guy actually is.

There is no doubt that Luffy will, at one point, surpass Kaido, but that time still hasn’t come. Luffy’s determination and his indestructible willpower will eventually lead him to victory, but until that happens – Kaido is the winner.
