Production on ‘Miami Vice ’85’ has been moving at full speed this month. Joseph Kosinski’s big-screen reboot of the 1980s detective drama, starring Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett, began filming earlier in October in Wayne, New Jersey. There, the stars were spotted on a set designed to resemble a 1980s shopping center.

The shoot has since moved into New York City. Just days ago, fresh set photos showed Jordan running through city alleys as Tubbs in a light gray suit and white tie, giving fans their first real look at the actor in action. The film, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the original series, explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami.

Now the production has made headlines for an entirely different reason. As JustJared reported, a man was arrested late Friday night, October 23, after allegedly appearing with a butcher knife near the Brooklyn set of ‘Miami Vice ’85’. The New York City Police Department said a 23-year-old Brooklyn man was taken into custody just after 11 p.m.

According to the NYPD, the man allegedly displayed a knife during a verbal dispute with another man in the area of Avenue N and McDonald Avenue. Police said he was taken into custody without incident and the knife was recovered.

Most importantly, no one was injured. The man was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, and it was not immediately clear whether he had retained an attorney.

Reports differ slightly on exactly how the incident unfolded. According to TMZ, citing police, the man ran across the set at around 11 p.m., disrupting filming, and allegedly threatened a production staffer. Video obtained by the outlet reportedly showed him being escorted away before he pulled a knife from his sweatshirt pocket, after which an officer placed him in handcuffs.

NBC News, citing the NYPD, described a verbal dispute with another man in the area rather than a confrontation with the crew. Until police release more details or court filings become public, the confirmed facts remain the arrest, the recovered knife, the charges, and that nobody was hurt.

At the time, the production was filming along Bay Parkway and McDonald Avenue, near Washington Cemetery. Some reports said the incident forced filming to pause. It remains unclear whether Jordan, Butler, or any of the film’s other stars were present when the incident occurred. Neither NBC News nor TMZ reported that the leads were on set at the time.

The reboot has been one of Universal’s most closely watched projects. Kosinski, the director behind ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘F1’, is filming the movie for IMAX from a script by Dan Gilroy. The cast also includes Walton Goggins as the film’s villain, along with Danny Ramirez, Dominic Sessa, and John Leguizamo, and comedian Andrew Schulz has reportedly joined as well.

Universal has pushed the release to May 19, 2028, from its original August 6, 2027 date. With filming continuing across New York, fans can expect more set photos to surface in the weeks ahead.

Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the challenges of shooting on busy city streets. Fortunately, the situation was resolved quickly by police, and the production appears set to continue as planned.

What do you think is the biggest challenge for major film productions shooting on busy city streets?
