“Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” is an upcoming action-adventure video game set in World War II in Occupied Paris. The story follows Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Black Panther (Azzuri), the king of Wakanda, as they team up to stop the Hydra terrorist group.

The game is being developed by Skydance New Media and published by Plaion, with a release date set for 2025. It’s based on the 2010 Marvel Comics series “Captain America / Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers.”

Amy Hennig, the writer and producer of the game, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to share more details about the setting and the historic team-up featured in the game.

Amy Hennig explained that the setting of the game gave them a lot of creative freedom. It allowed them to show a younger Steve Rogers, who is still figuring things out, instead of the more experienced Captain America seen in the movies. It also gave them the chance to introduce a new Black Panther from 1943.

It led us to do a bunch of interesting things, one of which was to not only tell a story with a young Steve Rogers who’s still trying to find his feet, as opposed to the more seasoned guy that we’ve seen in a lot of the films. It also let us introduce a new Black Panther of 1943.

It led us to tap into all the things that I love, all of the wonderful tropes of World War II-era adventure films, classic men-on-a-mission movies, and all of that. There’s a lot of intrigue in our story, a lot of twists and turns, fascinating characters, and interesting locations.

One of the locations was revealed to EW and is featured below:

The producer explained that in 1943, Wakanda was isolated and protected by its jungle, choosing to stay out of outside conflicts. However, events force them to get involved to protect themselves. Captain America and Black Panther start off by clashing, but they eventually have to team up to fight common enemies like Hydra.

She also hinted that there is a third super soldier in Paris, but didn’t give away details. The game’s story will focus on a growing threat that drives the characters forward.

Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle. They are non-interventionist, but events transpire that pull them into the conflict. They have to protect their interests. The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes that maybe want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?

In the game, players will see the story from four different viewpoints. Along with Captain America and Black Panther, players will control Gabriel Jones, a U.S. soldier and sharpshooter, and Nanali, a Wakandan spy in Paris.

Other characters include Julie, a key member of the French Resistance, and Howard Stark, played by Joel Johnstone. Each character has special skills that players will use in different parts of the game.

Hennig wants ‘Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’ to feel realistic and immersive, even with its fantasy elements. She’s aiming for high-quality visuals so players forget they’re playing a game and feel like they’re watching a Marvel movie.

Drawing from her experience with ‘Uncharted,’ she hopes the game will be exciting for both players and those watching. Her goal is to give fans a new, cinematic experience with Marvel characters and stories.

We’re entirely CG, so it’s really easy to get ungrounded real quick. You can see even the movies can fall under that trap; too much CG and you don’t know the ground you’re standing on. We really wanted the visual fidelity to be high so that you could kind of forget that you’re looking at a game, that it should feel and look and sound and smell like you’re watching a great Marvel movie or TV show, but you’re driving the action.
