A brand-new teaser for Alien: Earth has just dropped, and it’s definitely leaning into the creepy side of sci-fi. The upcoming series is created by Noah Hawley and will arrive on Hulu and FX on August 12. It asks a big question in its teaser: what does it really mean to be more than human?

The series will launch with two episodes on both Hulu and FX in the U.S., with international viewers catching it on Disney+. After that, new episodes will be released every Tuesday. The show is made up of eight episodes total and is executive produced by Alien legend Ridley Scott, so fans of the franchise are expecting something intense.

Set two years before the original 1979 Alien movie, Alien: Earth follows what happens after a deep space research ship called the USCSS Maginot crashes on Earth. That crash leads to some terrifying discoveries, and it’s not just the Xenomorphs that people have to worry about this time.

Sydney Chandler plays Wendy, a strange kind of human. She’s described as “a hybrid, a meta-human who has the brain and consciousness of a child but the body of an adult.” She teams up with a group of tactical soldiers, and together they uncover something deadly.

Also in the cast is Timothy Olyphant, who plays a synthetic humanoid named Kirsh. You’ll also see familiar faces like Essie Davis from The Babadook, Alex Lawther from Black Mirror, and a large supporting cast including Babou Ceesay, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diêm Camille, Adrian Edmondson, David Rysdahl, Samuel Blenkin, Adarsh Gourav, Sandra Yi Sencindiver, and Moe Bar-El.

The show is mixing horror, science fiction, and philosophical ideas. With a creator like Hawley and a producer like Scott, Alien: Earth looks like it’s aiming to be more than just another monster story. The teaser already hints that this series is going to explore what it means to be human, and what happens when we try to become something else.
