Original ‘Blade’ Trilogy Writer Slams MCU for Overthinking Reboot: “Blade Is a Relatively Simple Story”

'Blade' Is Still a Top-Priority Project for Marvel, But It Is Complicated, Insider Reveals

The long-awaited Blade reboot, featuring Mahershala Ali as the iconic vampire hunter, is facing significant hurdles. Announced in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con, the project initially sparked excitement among Marvel fans. However, nearly six years later, the film remains in limbo with no release date in sight.

Marvel’s journey to bring Blade into the MCU has been rocky. The studio has cycled through six writers and two directors, with Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange both departing the project.

In March 2025, Marvel officially paused development, removing Blade from its release schedule. The latest script attempt came from writer Eric Pearson in mid-2024, but progress stalled soon after.

Industry Insider Shares Grim Update on MCU’s ‘Blade’ Reboot

David S. Goyer, who wrote the original Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes, recently spoke about the reboot’s struggles on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He emphasized the character’s straightforward appeal. “The promise of Blade is that it should have insane a– kicking, it should be pretty scary, might be R-rated, and it should not be complicated,” Goyer said. He believes Blade’s story thrives on simplicity—a vampire hunter taking down supernatural threats, which made the 1998 film a groundbreaking hit that influenced modern superhero movies.

The reboot’s troubles trace back to its origins. Marvel regained the rights to Blade in 2011 after the original trilogy ended in 2004. Ali, fresh off his role in Luke Cage, pitched himself for the lead in 2019, and Marvel quickly signed him.

A brief voice cameo in 2021’s Eternals teased his arrival, but no significant updates have followed. Reports suggest Ali envisions Blade as a culturally significant project, akin to Black Panther for Chadwick Boseman, which may have complicated the creative process.

With no director, finalized script, or timeline, the future of Blade remains uncertain, leaving fans frustrated and eager for answers.

The Blade reboot’s endless delays are disappointing, especially with Mahershala Ali’s talent waiting to shine. Goyer’s right, Blade doesn’t need a complex plot to work; it just needs gritty action and a bold tone. I hope Marvel simplifies the vision and delivers a film that honors the character’s legacy while letting Ali make the role his own. What do you think about the struggles facing the Blade reboot?
