Overlord has become one of the most talked-about works in the otaku community and a very unlikely hit among the fandom. The series first began as a novel series back in 2010 and has since expanded to include an ongoing light novel and manga series, as well as an anime, which has now entered its fourth season, with a movie on the way. There is also an OVA episode, an ONA series, and a two-part movie. The movie, Overlord: The Holy Kingdom, is going to be a sequel to the anime and we have finally gotten confirmation that the movie is coming out in 2024, so we have decided to tell you everything you need to know in preparation for the upcoming movie!

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Overlord: The Holy Kingdom is an anime movie and will be a sequel to the Overlord anime series. Announced back in 2021, it has been confirmed that the movie will come out in 2024.
  • The movie will adapt The Holy Kingdom Arc of the Overlord light novel series, but the producers have revealed that the movie will leave out things from the original series.
  • The movie is going to be a canon sequel and not a compilation movie like the earlier movies, which were just compilations of earlier anime episodes.

Overlord: The Holy Kingdom release date and canon status

The first season aired in Japan from July 7, 2015, to September 29, 2015, consisting of 13 episodes. The adaptation was successful, and another two 13-episode seasons have since aired. Season two aired from January 10, 2018, to April 4, 2018, while the third season started on July 11, 2018, and ended on October 2, 2018. A fourth season premiered on July 5, 2022, and ended on September 27, 2022. Now, Overlord has become one of the more popular anime series of the late 2010s, which resulted in the production of additional animated works.

Several OVA and ONA works were produced, as well as two compilation movies which summed up the anime series in short. In 2021, though, the Overlord: The Holy Kingdom movie was announced, which was soon confirmed to be a sequel to the anime, i.e., a canon work, thus becoming the first Overlord movie with such a status. The announcement was updated with a teaser in 2022, and on January 1, 2024, it was officially confirmed that the Overlord: The Holy Kingdom movie would be debuting in theaters in 2024. We still don’t have a precise release date, but more information is to come soon.

Overlord: The Holy Kingdom plot

As far as the plot of the Overlord: The Holy Kingdom movie is concerned, we know that it is going to be an adaptation of The Paladin of the Holy Kingdom Arc, which was part of Volumes 12 and 13 of the light novel series. In this arc, the demi-humans led by Jaldabaoth launch an invasion of the Roble Holy Kingdom. Realizing that the threat posed by Jaldabaoth is real, the Holy Kingdom decides to call Momon to help them, and a major battle is getting ready.

And while the Overlord: The Holy Kingdom movie is going to adapt this arc, it has already been announced that it will not be a fully direct adaptation, i.e., that the movie will leave out some elements of the original light novel, but this shouldn’t really come as a surprise to fans, as even the anime series left out several elements from the original series, so the fact that the movie is going to leave out some elements from the original light novel doesn’t mean that the movie is going to be bad, as the anime has been following the same pattern for years now.
