PlayStation 6 Could Arrive in 2028, Says Former Sony Exec
Gamers are turning their attention to Sony’s next big console: the PlayStation 6. While many have speculated about its release date, former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida believes we might not see it until 2028.
Yoshida, who spent 38 years at Sony—31 of them with PlayStation—recently spoke with GamesBeat about console cycles. He noted that PlayStation used to release new consoles every five or six years, but that gap has been getting longer.
For example, the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, and while a PS4 Pro came out in 2016, the PlayStation 5 didn’t arrive until 2020, a full seven years later. If Sony follows this pattern, the PS6 could come in 2027, but Yoshida thinks that might be too soon.
“The PS5 generation was slowed down because of manufacturing issues,” Yoshida explained, referring to the pandemic-related chip shortages. Instead, he believes a 2028 launch “feels right to me.” Interestingly, a Microsoft leak suggested that the next Xbox could also release in 2028, meaning both gaming giants may be on a similar timeline.
Yoshida also commented on the gaming industry’s recent struggles, including layoffs and slowdowns after the pandemic boom. He called it an “overreaction to the COVID situation,” explaining, “Companies invested too much, including ourselves. Then we had to face reality and make adjustments.”
Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 continues to perform well, selling 9.5 million units over the 2024 holiday season, bringing total sales to over 75 million. In comparison, Xbox Series X/S sales have reached around 28.3 million but have shown little growth.
Adding to the speculation, a recent leak claimed that the PlayStation 6’s chip design is nearly complete, which could mean the console is on track for a 2027 release. Some rumors even suggest Sony is working on two versions of the PS6—one being a standard console and the other possibly a handheld or a more affordable variant.
While nothing is official yet, one thing is clear: the PlayStation 6 is on the horizon, and gamers will be watching closely for any new updates.
