Reports Indicate Marvel Studios Shifting Most Productions Overseas as Several Major Projects Receive Production Updates
Despite recent comments from Iger advocating for prioritizing quality over quantity and with only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ slated for release in 2024, Marvel Studios shows no signs of slowing down.
With the strike resolved, projects that have long been stuck in development limbo are finally moving forward, and others must be expedited to maintain coherence in the MCU timeline. It’s time for these projects to advance in production.
One long-awaited project is Don Cheadle’s ‘Armor Wars.’ Initially conceived as a movie following the comic storyline of the same name, it was intended as a sequel to ‘Secret Invasion’ (released last year) and ‘Ironheart’ (release date currently unknown). Don Cheadle himself confirmed back in 2011 that a War Machine film was in the works, with Joe Robert Cole hired as the writer. Now, according to NexusPoint News, filming for the project is set to commence in January 2025 in the United Kingdom and Atlanta.
‘Avengers 5’ has faced unexpected challenges in recent months, particularly with Jonathan Majors being dismissed by the studio after being found guilty of third-degree assault. Reports suggest that the absence of Kang, the main villain, has left the direction of the movie uncertain. The studio grappled with the decision to either replace Kang or recast the role. However, it appears they have reached a resolution, as production is set to move to the United Kingdom in January 2025.
‘Shang-Chi 2’ is also on the horizon. Following the surprise success of the first film, development on a sequel began in December 2021, with director and writer Destin Cretton and star Simu Liu expected to return. Liu expressed interest in further exploring his character’s journey with the Ten Rings and his role in the MCU. However, by July 2023, Liu’s uncertainty about the sequel’s production timeline arose, as it was scheduled for release after ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ which had been delayed from 2025 to 2026 and underwent a name change in the interim. The latest reports now indicate that production for ‘Shang-Chi 2’ is set to commence in March 2025, also in the United Kingdom.
