Robert Kirkman Teases ‘Invincible’ Season 4 with Unused Comic Story Where Mark Battles the Devil
Big things are happening in the world of ‘Invincible.’ Season 3 just wrapped up with a wild finale, and now creator Robert Kirkman is dropping some exciting hints about what’s next. We’re talking about Mark Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun, possibly heading to hell to take on Satan himself in Season 4. Yeah, you heard that right—Mark might be punching the devil in the face.
Let’s back up a bit. Season 3 ended with a insane fight between Mark and a Viltrumite named Conquest, voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. This guy was brutal, smashing Mark through a beach full of people and leaving a trail of chaos. It was bloody, it was intense, and it had us glued to the screen. Eve, played by Gillian Jacobs, woke up from a coma with a robotic leg and jumped in to help, but Conquest didn’t hold back—he ripped her jaw off and punched a hole through her. Oliver, voiced by Christian Convery, got his teeth knocked out too. In the end, Mark and Eve teamed up to bash Conquest’s skull in, but there’s a twist—Cecil Stedman, played by Walton Goggins, kept the body for some secret Viltrum studies. Sneaky move, Cecil.
Now, here’s where it gets juicy. Kirkman, who runs Skybound Entertainment and talked with Variety, let slip a cool detail in the post-credits scene. Damien Darkblood, the demon detective voiced by Clancy Brown, popped up in hell after being gone since Season 1. He’s chatting with a devilish figure voiced by Bruce Campbell—yep, the ‘Evil Dead’ legend himself. They’re plotting to drag a ‘surface dweller’ down below, and I’ve got a strong feeling it’s Mark.
Kirkman said, ‘There’s a storyline from the comic that I never got around to doing. Every superhero story has some chapter where they go to hell and they fight the devil. It happens in DC and Marvel comics. It’s a big deal. I never got around to doing anything like that in “Invincible.”’ He’s teasing that Season 4 might finally bring this unused idea to life, and I’m here for it.
Kirkman’s got a knack for keeping us on our toes. He also talked about that Conquest fight, calling it the ‘Monaco sequence.’ He wanted it to top the Season 1 train scene with Omni-Man. ‘That was definitely a goal,’ he said. ‘When I was writing that episode, I was very keenly aware that Nolan fight had become a high-water mark of the series and I wanted to try to elevate things as much as I could.’ It’s clear he’s pushing ‘Invincible’ to new heights, and it’s working—Season 3 felt like a rollercoaster.
There’s more to chew on too. Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Conquest? That’s a ‘Walking Dead’ reunion with Steven Yeun, who played Glenn to Morgan’s Negan back in the day. Kirkman admitted, ‘When he started showing up on “The Boys,” I couldn’t let Eric Kripke have all the fun.’ He loved the idea of a rematch where Glenn—well, Mark—gets the win this time. And get this, last week’s episode had Aaron Paul and Jonathan Banks from ‘Breaking Bad’ together too, though Kirkman swears that one was pure luck.
Mark’s growing up fast. After thinking he killed Angstrom Levy earlier in Season 3, he’s now swearing to take out anyone who messes with his family. Kirkman said, ‘This is a guy who deeply regretted what he thought was the murder of Angstrom Levy because he felt like it was him becoming more like his father.’ But by the finale, Mark’s ready to get his hands dirty, even if Conquest might not stay dead. Oh, and speaking of not dead—Angstrom Levy, Battle Beast, and those creepy Sequids are still out there, setting up more trouble.
So, when’s Season 4 hitting? Kirkman’s keeping it vague but hopeful. ‘The goal is to continue the cadence that we’ve had with Seasons 2 and 3,’ he said. ‘The plan is that you will see Season 4 in 2026.’ Amazon’s backing the show hard, letting Skybound work ahead, which is why we got Season 3 so quick after Season 2. Thragg, the big Viltrumite boss, is cast too, and Kirkman’s hyped, saying, ‘He’s been cast and he’s amazing.’ No word on who yet, but I’m betting it’s a heavy hitter.
Back to that hell tease—Kirkman’s playing coy about Bruce Campbell’s role. ‘Could be the devil. Could be. We’ll just have to see,’ he grinned. If Mark does end up fighting Satan, it’ll be a wild shift from the comics, where Damien Darkblood never even went to hell. Kirkman loves the character though, and Clancy Brown’s gravelly voice makes him a fan favorite. Pair that with Campbell’s devilish charm, and Season 4 could be Mark’s craziest battle yet. I can’t wait to see how this all shakes out.
