The latest chapter in the Star Wars saga, Skeleton Crew, has concluded its run. While the show received positive reviews from fans, viewership numbers for the premiere were relatively modest, leaving the future of the series uncertain.

One aspect that stood out to fans—particularly in comparison to the The Acolyte—was the noticeable absence of cameo appearances from major Star Wars characters, despite the show expanding on existing lore in interesting ways.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Skeleton Crew creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford explained their decision to forgo featuring well-known Star Wars figures in the series.

Jon Watts and Christopher Ford explained that while they were open to including Star Wars cameos and Lucasfilm supported the idea, they chose to focus on their own story. By the end of writing the first season, they realized the story worked well without needing any cameos.

Christopher Ford: We were open to it.

Jon Watts: Yeah, and it’s not like anyone at Lucasfilm was like, “You can’t do that.” If anything, they were like, “Yeah, if any opportunities come up, we’re totally open to that,” but we were focused on making our story work. It was kind of a scenario where we got to the end of writing the first season, and we made it through without needing any cameos.

The creators explained that adding cameos would have disrupted their carefully built story. They wanted viewers to connect with the new characters on their own merits, without relying on familiar faces. In the future, they see potential for their characters to grow and fit into the broader Star Wars galaxy.

Christopher Ford: And then when we’d look back and be like, “Could we stick one in?” It would mess it up, so we didn’t. We built this little thing.

Jon Watts: I’m much more interested in the idea of getting people to like these characters without using cameos as a crutch. And then potentially in the future, seeing our characters as they grow up, [we’d see] how they would fit into the larger galaxy. I think there’s a lot of possibilities there.

The part that Watts mentioned “potentially in the future, seeing our characters as they grow up” could be a potential hint related to ‘The Mandalorian’ crossover. As you are likely aware, Dave Filoni is currently working on a big MandoVerse crossover movie and the latest rumors are, that Skeleton Crew characters will join our MandoVerse cast on that massive adventure.

‘Skeleton Crew’ takes place during the New Republic era, alongside ‘The Mandalorian,’ The ‘Book of Boba Fett,’ and ‘Ahsoka,’ occurring after ‘Return of the Jedi,’ meaning this scenario is highly probable.
