Some Fans Don’t Want Zendaya in “Spider-Man 4” — And They May Have a Valid Reason

“Spider-Man 4” is the upcoming addition to the Spider-Man film series within the MCU. Confirmed to be in development last year, there have been few updates on the project’s progress.

The film is currently searching for a new director, as Jon Watts has stepped down to pursue other projects outside the MCU. Watts recently mentioned that replicating the success of “No Way Home” would be challenging, making it a good time to exit on a high note.

It was announced yesterday that Destin Daniel Cretton is in serious negotiations to direct “Spider-Man 4,” with Zendaya and Tom Holland also in discussions to return.

While Tom Holland is expected to reprise his role, Zendaya’s return is less certain. As you may recall, at the end of “No Way Home,” Doctor Strange’s spell causes everyone, including MJ, to forget Spider-Man’s true identity. Peter Parker chooses not to reintroduce himself to MJ, believing it’s better for her to move on without him.

Reports suggest that Zendaya is not interested in a cameo role and would require a more substantial part. However, given the circumstances, her return seems unlikely, and fan reactions to the possibility have been mixed.

Fans have raised several valid concerns about including MJ in a larger role in “Spider-Man 4” if she has no interactions with Spider-Man. Given the spell’s effect, which causes her to forget him entirely, it would be challenging to justify significant interactions between them. Undoing the spell could also diminish the emotional impact of “No Way Home.”

Many fans believe it might be more sensible to introduce a new supporting cast and potentially a new love interest for Spider-Man. There has been a long-standing interest in bringing Black Cat into the MCU, with Sydney Sweeney as a fan-favorite choice for the role.

Black Cat could bring a refreshing dynamic to the franchise, offering a different kind of support for Spider-Man. Her occasional clashes with the law and Spider-Man’s strict moral code would create an engaging tension, revitalizing the character interactions that some fans feel have become stale.
