‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Ticket Demand Is Blowing Past Every Early Prediction
Tom Holland’s return to the Spider-Man suit has been building anticipation for years, and that patience is now translating into real numbers at the box office. Nearly five years since ‘No Way Home’ closed out one era of the franchise, Sony and Marvel Studios appear to be sitting on one of the biggest theatrical events of the entire year. Early buzz around test screenings had already compared the film favorably to some of the best entries in the franchise’s history, and that excitement has only grown as the release date nears.
Tracking for ‘Brand New Day’ started out strong but relatively modest by blockbuster standards. Three week tracking projections initially indicated a $180 million to $190 million domestic start, which would have still represented the second biggest opening of the franchise behind ‘No Way Home,’ and the biggest domestic debut of the year so far. That was already considered a win for Marvel given a somewhat uneven stretch at the box office recently.
Then the numbers started climbing fast. According to industry tracking account Global Box Office, presales for the film have already reached nearly 50 million dollars domestically, a pace that has pushed analysts to treat a 250 million dollar opening weekend as closer to a floor than a ceiling. Box Office Pro subsequently updated its own forecast to a range of 230 million to 250 million dollars, putting ‘Brand New Day’ within reach of ‘No Way Home’s franchise record of 260.1 million dollars.
What makes the surge notable is that it is happening without one of the format advantages that historically padded Spider-Man’s opening numbers. The film will not have access to IMAX screens in North America during its first two weeks because Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is occupying those auditoriums until mid August. Sony is instead leaning on other premium large format screens, with reports suggesting the film could set records on some of them despite the IMAX gap.
The international picture looks just as strong. Projections suggest a worldwide opening weekend could land close to 550 million dollars, putting ‘Brand New Day’ on pace to cross the billion dollar mark during its full theatrical run, and possibly threaten ‘No Way Home’s massive 600.8 million dollar global debut. Unlike its predecessor, which was blocked from Chinese theaters entirely, this installment reportedly won’t face that same limitation, giving it an even wider path to a bigger worldwide total.
Early word of mouth is adding fuel to the fire as well. Test screening reactions have reportedly been glowing, with some early viewers comparing it favorably to ‘Spider-Man 2’ as one of the strongest entries the wall crawler has ever had on screen. The film sends Peter Parker back to his street level roots while he grapples with a dangerous genetic mutation, and finds him facing off against the Hulk and possibly Jean Grey, with the Punisher joining the fray.
Whatever happens on opening weekend, the trajectory tells its own story. A franchise many assumed had already peaked with ‘No Way Home’ is now tracking to potentially outdo it, IMAX or not. ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’ swings into theaters on July 31.
With numbers like these rolling in before a single ticket has actually been used, do you think ‘Brand New Day’ can actually top ‘No Way Home’ at the box office, or is this hype getting ahead of itself?
