‘Star Wars’ Reportedly Cut Natalie Portman’s Secret Return as Padme in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Some time ago rumors surfaced that Natalie Portman will reprise her role as Padme in the upcoming ‘Ahsoka’ season 2. It made sense at the time considering that we’ve already seen Hayden Christensen return as Anakin in season 1 and the show clearly has perfectly valid mechanisms for deceased characters to return.

The rumor was ultimately debunked, but it appears that Portman was at one point in time ready to return to the franchise, and even filmed her scenes.

Industry insider Jeff Sneider revealed on John Rocha’s The Hot Mic that Natalie Portman filmed scenes for ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ while working on MCU’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’ However, the footage featuring her as Padmé did not make it into the final version of the show.

‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 Could Bring Back Obi-Wan Kenobi, According to Latest Rumor

The timing made sense, as both productions overlapped: ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ premiered on Disney+ on May 27, 2022, while ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’ where Portman played Mighty Thor, was released in theaters on July 8, 2022. With this overlap, Disney had the opportunity to include Portman in both projects, but her potential return to the Star Wars universe was ultimately cut, leaving fans unaware of her involvement.

“She previously did shoot some stuff for the ‘Obi-Wan [Kenobi]’ show while working on ‘[Thor]: Love and Thunder,’ but it didn’t make the final cut, so it’s too early to know…”

To be fair, the only way in which Portman could reprise her role in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ is through a series of flashbacks, as the show lacks the World Between Worlds concept that allows Ahsoka to communicate with Anakin “effortlessly.”

The insiders still claim that Portman might appear in ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2. If she doesn’t and if the rumor that she indeed filmed her scenes turns out to be true, I guess she can always return in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ season 2.

A few months ago, during Los Angeles Comic-Con, McGregor mentioned that they are “exploring” the idea of continuing the show. He also confirmed he wants to wear the Clone Wars armor again and hopes to collaborate with Hayden Christensen in more Prequels-era flashbacks, similar to those featured in Season 1. This makes Padme flashback all the more likely.

These are indeed good news, especially since the director of the show initially hinted that Obi-Wan’s story was intentionally closed in the first season:
