Todd Phillips Reveals Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker’s Bizarre Reaction to Meeting “Alpha Male” Batman
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is the eagerly awaited next installment from DC. The film, which takes place in and around Arkham Asylum, is classified as a drama, but exact plot details have yet to be revealed.
The cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson, with the screenplay co-written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver.
Initially, the project was described as a musical, but Phillips has since clarified that it doesn’t follow the traditional musical format, even while referring to it as such. The first film in the franchise was a huge success for the studios, despite a segment of fans disliking this portrayal of the Joker.
As the franchise continues, many fans are increasingly convinced that Todd Phillips has never read a comic, a sentiment that some of his statements seem to support.
To be clear, Phillips never claimed that his Joker is comic-accurate; he recently confirmed that Arthur will never transform into the Clown Prince of Crime, as that’s simply not his character. Similarly, Lady Gaga noted that her interpretation of Harley Quinn will differ significantly from the comic book version.
In a recent conversation with IGN, Phillips finally disclosed how the Joker would react to encountering Batman, and the answer is honestly quite cringeworthy.
I think Arthur would be in awe of the alpha male that is Batman. I really do. I think Arthur would look up and appreciate it. I think he’d be in awe of that.
I think Arthur always had a fascination with men at ease, and he is not a man at ease. [Robert De Niro’s] Murray Franklin in the first movie was a man at ease. He probably saw the guys he worked with as men at ease, and that was the one thing that Arthur could never be was a man at ease.
Phillips reiterated that there will not be a “Joker 3,” and the recently leaked ending of the movie further supports that claim.
The responses to Phillips’ statement were absolutely brilliant:
All of a sudden Todd Phillips is some profound director. Basically ripped off Taxi Driver and let Phoenix drive the entire movie.

Wow. Say you don’t understand Batman without saying you don’t understand Batman.
Bats isn’t a man at ease or an alpha male. He’s a deeply broken person fighting a suicidal battle to make sure no one else has to suffer like he did. It’s only after a small army of sidekicks and allies join him that Batman starts to regain his humanity and be more than The Mission.
Also, all the alpha/beta/whatever stuff is even more BS than astrology.

“Would Be in Awe of the Alpha Male That is Batman” what in the cringe….

Between Phillips and that idiotic show runner for The Boys, I’m starting to wonder if either of them have read a single comic or watched any of the other films.
