Wagner Moura Is the Villain Warner Bros. Needed for the ‘Oceans’ Prequel

Few heist franchises carry the kind of effortless cool that the ‘Ocean’s’ films have managed across decades, and Warner Bros. is clearly betting big on keeping that tradition alive. The studio has been quietly building one of the more intriguing origin stories in recent Hollywood memory, a period prequel that trades Las Vegas casinos for the glamorous danger of early 1960s Europe. With a cast already turning heads and a behind-the-camera talent pool that reads like an awards-season wish list, the anticipation surrounding this project has been building steadily.

The prequel is set against the backdrop of the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix, which immediately signals the kind of stylish, sun-drenched tension that made the original trilogy so watchable. The project has been described as a stylish, old-school caper inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘To Catch a Thief’, a comparison that speaks directly to the tone Warner Bros. is chasing. It is not a reboot or a retread but rather a deliberate deep dive into the mythology of a character audiences already love.

The casting news that has now sent the internet into a frenzy involves none other than Wagner Moura. Moura is in negotiations to join Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper in the untitled ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ prequel at Warner Bros. Pictures, where he is set to play the story’s villain. Cooper is directing on top of starring and producing, while Robbie is also starring and producing via her LuckyChap banner, with Tom Ackerley also producing.

Robbie teased the premise at CinemaCon earlier this year, saying that “before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows, his parents,” with Robbie and Cooper understood to be playing those very roles. The ‘Ocean’s’ franchise has always understood the importance of a compelling antagonist to drive its heist mechanics, and the new addition follows a lineage of memorable big-screen foils. Andy Garcia played casino owner Terry Benedict in the 2001 film, while later entries introduced Vincent Cassel in ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ and Al Pacino in ‘Ocean’s Thirteen.’

Moura brings an extraordinary amount of prestige to the role. Earlier this year, Moura made history as the first Brazilian to be nominated for the Best Actor Oscar and the first to win the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Drama, both in recognition of his starring role in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s ‘The Secret Agent.’ The political thriller earned four Oscar nominations in total, including Best Picture and Best International Feature Film. The Brazilian actor has spent years building a body of work that balances prestige drama with genre spectacle, and his ‘Narcos’ turn as Pablo Escobar remains one of the defining villain performances of the streaming era.

Beyond ‘Oceans,’ Moura has an impressive slate ahead, including a Netflix sci-fi thriller opposite Greta Lee, a directorial debut starring alongside Elisabeth Moss and Brian Tyree Henry, and Panos Cosmatos’ vampire film ‘Flesh of the Gods’ opposite Kristen Stewart. Production on the ‘Oceans’ prequel is expected to begin shooting in late July in Paris before moving to the South of France, with a release date set for June 25, 2027.

With Moura now circling the project, the prequel has the kind of antagonist capable of going toe-to-toe with two of the most compelling screen presences working today, and whether his villain proves worthy of standing opposite Robbie and Cooper is exactly the debate fans should be having right now.
