What Did Viserys Say About Aegon’s Dream Before He Died?

In what was one of the most emotional moments of the entire season, King Viserys Targaryen was on his last legs in episode 8 of House of the Dragon when he was there for his daughter and grandsons when they needed him most and was able to dine with his family one last time. The king went to bed as he was talking about Aegon’s dream to Alicent in his last moments right before he died. So, what did Viserys say about Aegon’s dream?

King Viserys was talking about how real the threat from the north is and that Aegon was the “Prince that was Promised.” However, the problem was that he wasn’t specific regarding which Aegon he was referring to. Obviously, he must have been talking about Jon Snow, who was also named Aegon.

It is probably the fact that Alicent believes that Viserys was talking about THEIR Aegon that would enforce her belief that their son should be the next king of the Seven Kingdoms. Of course, this should be one of the things that will further add any animosity between Alicent and Rhaenyra as the Dance of the Dragon is about to commence. Now, let’s talk more about what Viserys said regarding Aegon’s dream.

What Did Viserys Say About Aegon?

Ever since the first episode of House of the Dragon, we learned about a mission that had been passed down from King Aegon the Conqueror to the other kings of the Seven Kingdoms. It specifically talks about a dream that Aegon once had about a threat coming from the north. And that was the reason why the Conqueror united the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule, as the same dream allowed him to see that only a Targaryen monarch would be able to stand against that threat.

Of course, we know for a fact that the dream that Viserys was talking about referred to the Night King and the Army of the Dead that waited beyond the Wall until the time was once again right for them to march on the rest of Westeros. The fact that Aegon the Conqueror once had this dream was what mandated the other Targaryen kings to continue the line as much as they could, as only a Targaryen could unite the entire realm against the danger that was to come from the north.

As such, King Viserys, throughout most of his early life, was fueled by this secret dream that he passed on to Princess Rhaenyra, who he chose as his heir. It was also this dream that made him so obsessed about producing a male heir that he believed could be the king that would unite the entire realm against this threat or, at the very least, produce the prophesized “Prince that was Promised.” And King Viserys himself became obsessed with becoming a dreamer because he believed that the power of prophecy, as shown by history, was far greater than the power of the dragons.

However, it had been about 20 years since the day Viserys passed on this knowledge to Rhaenyra, as he didn’t say anything about it during the time that his disease was slowly and steadily eating him up from the inside. And episode 8 allowed us to see Viserys in his worst state as he was no longer himself mentally and physically due to the effects of his disease.

Still, seemingly fueled by his love for his family, King Viserys acted as a king for one last time when he helped Rhaenyra and Lucerys in relation to the succession of Driftmark as he was the one who proclaimed his grandson as the rightful heir to the lordship of House Velaryon. After that, he desired to dine with his family one last time because this was the final time that all members of House Targaryen would be under one roof in a somewhat peaceful manner.

After allowing his family to see him as he was for what seemed to be the final time, the king was able to mend any of the problems that the Targaryens had with one another, as it looked like Rhaenyra and Alicent finally decided to let bygones be bygones. Their children, with the exception of Aemond, also seemed to have decided to move on from their past. They also celebrated the betrothal of Rhaenyra’s sons with Daemon’s daughters. And seeing that his family was seemingly at peace, Viserys decided to call it a night.

However, as he was lying in his bed, seemingly dying, Viserys talked to Alicent about how real Aegon’s dream was about the north and how Aegon was the “Prince that was Promised.” This scene seemed to indicate that Viserys finally became a dragon dreamer that had the power of prophecy as he must have dreamt about the threat coming from the north and the Targaryen prince that had the capacity to unite the entire realm against this foe.

But as Viserys was talking about that dream, Alicent was visibly confused because this must have been the first time she heard anything about Aegon the Conqueror’s dream. As far as the series is concerned, the only other person that knows about the Conqueror’s dream is Rhaenyra, as she was the one chosen by King Viserys to be his heir. And as Alicent was calling for the maesters to ease the king’s pain, Viserys passed away peacefully on his bed.

Which Aegon Was Viserys Talking About?

While it was never clear what Viserys was talking about when he was mumbling about the threat that was coming from the north and about Aegon, it was clear to fans of Game of Thrones that he was talking about Jon Snow. In case anyone has forgotten, Jon Snow was the secret son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. And in her deathbed, Lyanna named the boy Aegon but was named Jon Snow by Ned Stark to hide his Targaryen lineage from Robert Baratheon’s wrath.

Of course, we saw the fact that it was Jon Snow that tried to rally the entire Seven Kingdoms against the Army of the Dead that the Night King was marching all the way from beyond the Wall. He was the only one that made an effort to try to make sure that the living continued to live and that they had a chance to fight against the biggest threat that the world had ever seen. And the fact that he dedicated his life to fighting this threat from the north allowed the people of Westeros to put up a valiant stand against the Army of the Dead and kill the Night King, courtesy of Arya Stark, who used Viserys’s dagger to kill this dreaded foe.

But the problem was that Queen Alicent knew nothing about this dream and who Viserys was talking about. On top of that, they named their son Aegon, as she must have believed that the king was talking about their son in his dying moments. He also referred to Aegon as the “Prince that was Promised.” Of course, he was talking about the Jon Snow version of Aegon, but Alicent must’ve thought that he was referring to their son.

In that regard, this could be the fuel that would reignite the flames of war between Alicent and Rhaenyra after they had already seemingly buried the hatchet in that dinner scene involving the entire Targaryen household. The fact that Alicent believes that the king was talking about her son will probably be the reason why she will once again push for the coronation of Aegon instead of supporting Rhaenyra as the true heir. And this will probably be the reason why the Dance of the Dragons will finally commence, as season 1 of House of the Dragon is in its final act.
