What happened to Rem in Re:Zero?

The events we are about to describe happened in Arc 3 of the light novel series and ultimately resulted in Rem’s coma. Here is what happened. Rem took Ram’s place in taking Emilia and Roswaal to the Royal Capital, though Subaru insisted on going as well, prompting Rem to go. However, he ended up under Crusch’s treatment, so Rem accompanied him.

After visiting Kadomon, she sensed that something happened to Ram, and she headed with Subaru to the Roswaal mansion, but she abandoned him on Fleur to go ahead and fight the Witch Cult, who killed her. In another loop, Rem noticed that Subaru had a strong trauma, and she decided to take him to the mansion to see Emilia.

Along the way they were attacked by the cult, which took Subaru away. Rem followed them to a cave, where she fought several members of the witch cult until Petelgeuse caught her, twisting her limbs and head with his Hidden Hand, then mocking Subaru and then her love for him, releasing her and leaving her to her fate, almost dead.

However, with the last of her strength, she released Subaru from the chains with a spell, dying happily in her arms; Her lifeless body was mourned and carried by Subaru to the Roshwall mansion where she was frozen alongside Subaru. In another life, Rem tried to help him by calling the knights, but none of them listened to her.

Still, they hired Otto and the other merchants to evacuate the Irlam village. To her surprise, Hakugei devoured everyone on the road. Knowing that the evil beast would not go away, Rem pinned Subaru to allow him to escape, sacrificing herself for him, her existence being erased. Coming back from the dead, Subaru proposed to Rem to run away together to Kararagi, but she refused and urged him to go ahead stating that he was her hero, so she helped him form an alliance with Crusch, Anastasia, and Russell.

All the troops headed to the Flugel Tree, where Rem joked about having a polygamy with Subaru and Emilia to reassure Subaru, since Rem had found out that Subaru was lying to try to protect her. When the battle against Hakugei began, she attacked him with her magic, then when the evil beast split into three, he transformed into an Oni. Later, she threw Subaru with an Al Huma to pull Hakugei to the ground, allowing Wilhelm to take him out.

Since she was injured, she and other badly wounded soldiers had to return to the Royal Capital, but not before saying goodbye to Subaru and making a promise that they would reunite soon. However, on the road, they were confronted by Regulus and Lye, also known as Gluttony. Rem decided to fight them, though Lye ended up leaving her in a coma by consuming her name and her memories, erasing her existence. When the archbishops left, the Royal Guard arrived, and they took her to the capital.

Does Rem wake up from her slumber?

Rem was in an induced coma during Arcs 4 and 5, as well as during the majority of Arc 6. So, what happened in Arc 6 that changed Rem’s fate in Re:Zero? It all started like this: Subaru, during his journey together with a team composed of Emilia, Ram, Beatrice, Meili, Patrasche, Anastasia, and Julius, went to the Pleiades Watchtower in search of a solution for Rem’s state and that of the people affected by the authority of the lust of Chapel; Rem was transported in a wheelchair created by Subaru as well as in a dragon caravan while being cared for and by her sister.

Arriving at the Watchtower, Rem is transported and stored in the green room on the fourth floor; the heroes hoped that she would be revived there, but it was not successful. Rem was in that room until the siege of the archbishops of Gluttony to the tower, where she was taken out and carried on Patrasche’s back in order to protect her from dangers, especially Lye Batenkaitos.

After the archbishops, Lye, the Shaula beast, and the third test were overcome, Rem was returned to the green room, where she remained until the ambush of the Witch of Envy, where, in a desperate attempt, Subaru tries to save her along with a newly appeared Louis, however, she manages to catch them and they are transported to an unknown meadow surrounded by a large forest; at that moment, Rem woke up but she was still an amnesiac and had absolutely no recollection of who she was and who the people around here were.

Will Rem get her memories back?

At this moment, Rem is still suffering from amnesia so we don’t have a definitive answer to this question. On the other hand, Rem is an essential character in the franchise and we have absolutely no doubt that she will regain her memories at one point in the story. We just don’t know when it is going to happen.
